The flag was designed and sewn in Jackson by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver (1885-1959), wife of former State Senator RB Oliver . Their design has not changed until today.

history

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and blue. These represent courage, purity, vigilance and justice. These colors also reflect the historical status of the state as part of the French colony of Louisiana . In the center of the white stripe is the Missouri seal , surrounded by a blue band with 24 stars, representing Missouri's acceptance as the 24th state in the United States .

A tape with the English state motto surrounds the sign:

"United we stand, divided we fall."

"United we stand, in two we fall."

Including the Latin motto:

"Salus populi suprema lex esto."

"The good of the people is the highest law."

Again underneath is the year 1820 ( MDCCCXX ) in Roman numerals .

The bald eagle in the seal holds olive branches as symbols of peace and arrows as a sign of war. This is to indicate the power of the central government. In the other fields of the seal a grizzly bear and a crescent moon are shown. The grizzly stands for the strength and courage of citizens. The crescent moon, the heraldic symbol for the second son, symbolizes Missouri at the time of admission to the United States. Missouri was the second state to be formed out of the Louisiana Purchase area.

Shield holders are two bears.
