The flag of the US state of New Mexico was introduced in 1925.

symbolism

The flag shows the sun of the Zia people. The colors represent the Spanish colonial era and can still be found in the flag of Spain today .

The four groups of four rays each represent:

  • The four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter
  • The day: sunrise, noon, evening and night
  • Life itself: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age
  • The four cardinal points: north, south, west, east

The flag is the result of a 1925 Daughters of the American Revolution design competition presented by Dr. Harry Mera from Santa Fe won. As an archaeologist, Mera was familiar with the Zia sun symbol , which was found on a pot in the 19th century.

In a 2001 Internet vote by the North American Vexillological Association , the North American flag scouting association , this flag was voted first among the flags of the US states and the Canadian provinces . Above all, the high recognition value and the design were praised .

Loyalty oath

Under the New Mexico Statutes and Court Rules, Section 12-3-7, the oath of allegiance to the flag of New Mexico is :
