Heteronema ovale is a marine protist species.

features

Heteronema ovale forms egg-shaped, flattened cells, 17 to 25 micrometers in size. The pellicular striae, fine rib-like courses on the outer skin, run ventrally and dorsally in an S-helix shape. The cells have special digestive organelles, the nucleus and food vacuole are on the left side of the cell.

Heteronema ovale move mainly by turning and flinging on the ground. The two flagella approximately equal in length are 1.3 to 1.5 times the length of the cell, while swimming they point in different directions. The backward-pointing flagellum is more strongly built than the forward-pointing one and is thickened at its base.

Way of life and systematics

Heteronema ovale is a marine species. Based on the findings so far in tropical and subtropical Australia, the Baltic Sea and off the Korean coast, a worldwide distribution can be assumed.

They can easily be confused with some other species in the genus such as Heteronema exaratum or Heteronema larseni , their length and the shape of their end allow a distinction.
