history

The first unofficial flag of Vermont was that of the Vermont Militia, the Green Mountain Boys , who organized in 1770. The first use of the Flag of the Green Mountain Boys dates back to 1777. There is no record of the flag being an official symbol of Vermont, no description of the flag's appearance or any law endorsing it.

Vermont adopted a flag very similar to the U.S. national flag in 1804 - with 17 white and red stripes. Since the number of states had risen to 17 in 1804, it was expected that the US flag would also have 17 stripes - which did not happen. So Vermont had introduced 17 strips. The description text was officially:

“It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont, that from and after the first day of May, AD, 1804, the Flag of this State be Seventeen Stripes alternate red and white; that the Union be Seventeen Stars white on a blue field, with the word Vermont in capitals above the said Stripes and Stars. "

“It is hereby passed by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont that from and after the first day of May, AD, 1804, the flag of that state should show seventeen stripes alternating red and white; that the Union is seventeen stars in a blue field, with the word Vermont in capital letters above the said stripes and stars "

In 1837 the flag was changed again, again very closely based on the US flag.
