The flag of the US state of Ohio was officially introduced on May 9, 1902.

It was designed by the architect John Eisenmann for the 1901 Pan America Exhibition . The big blue triangle stands for Ohio's mountains and valleys, the stripes for roads and waterways. The seventeen stars are intended to represent that Ohio became the 17th state to join the union. The white circle in the red center represents not only the first letter of the state name, but also the nickname of the state, " the Buckeye State " (" the horse chestnut state ").
