history

The flag was designed by Jesse Cox, an art teacher from Frankfort, Kentucky . It was adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly on March 26, 1918 and adopted in its current final form in 1928.

layout

The flag consists of the Kentucky seal on a navy blue field, surrounded by the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" above and the branches of the goldenrod , the state flower, below.

The seal shows two friends who greet each other with a handshake. The popular imagination claims that the suede-clad man on the left is Daniel Boone , who was responsible for much of Kentucky's development, and the man in the suit on the right is said to be Henry Clay , Kentucky's most famous statesman.

The official declaration is that the two men symbolically stand for all explorers and statesmen, and not for certain people. It surrounds the state motto:

"United we stand, divided we fall."

"Together we are strong, divided we go under."

The motto comes from the lyrics of The Liberty Song , a patriotic song of the American Revolution .

Pledge

In 2000 the General Assembly established the following pledge of loyalty to the flag:

"I pledge allegiance to the Kentucky flag, and to the Sovereign State for which it stands, one Commonwealth, blessed with diversity, natural wealth, beauty, and grace from on High."

"I swear allegiance to the flag of Kentucky and the sovereign state it represents, a community blessed with diversity, natural wealth, beauty, and grace from God."
