Governor's flag

The flag of the US state of Pennsylvania was introduced on June 13, 1907.

The flag's blue cloth goes back to military flags. In the middle is the state seal from 1893, which partly comes from the seal of Philadelphia from 1701.

The seal contains a ship under full sail in the upper third, a plow in the middle and three bundles of wheat in the lower third. These symbols represent the importance of trade, labor, perseverance and agriculture to the state.

The bald eagle , the heraldic animal of the USA, symbolizes the sovereignty of the state. Shield holders are two horses .

The state motto is written on a red tape:

" Virtue, Liberty and Independence " ( virtue, freedom and independence )
