Governor's flag

The current flag of the US state of Michigan was introduced in 1913.

layout

The flag features the state's seal in the center on a dark blue field, as specified in Michigan federal law . (The governor of Michigan has a variant of the flag with a white field instead of a blue field.)

There are three tapes with Latin mottos on the flag:

  • Red ribbon: E pluribus unum ("One of many" - motto of the United States)
  • Light blue shield: Tuebor ("I will defend")
  • White band: Si quæris peninsulam amœnam circumspice ("If you are looking for a friendly peninsula, have a look around!")

Crest holders are a wapiti and moose . The bald eagle on the shield comes from the seal of the United States .

The coat of arms shows a man with a raised hand and a gun in front of the rising sun on a peninsula. The raised hand stands for the will to peace, the rifle for the determination to defend oneself.

history

The current flag, introduced in 1913, is the state's third flag. The first flag featured a portrait of Michigan’s first governor, Stevens T. Mason, on one side and the state's coat of arms along with a soldier and woman on the other. The second flag, introduced in 1885, had the state coat of arms on one side and the coat of arms of the United States on the other.

Michigan's flag oath was written by Harold G. Coburn and made official in Public Act No. 165 of 1972.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of Michigan, and to the state for which it stands, two beautiful peninsulas united by a bridge of steel, where equal opportunity and justice to all is our ideal."

"I swear allegiance to the flag of Michigan and the state it stands for, two beautiful peninsulas united by a steel bridge where equal opportunities for all and justice are our ideal."

The bridge mentioned is the Machinac Bridge , which connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.
