Jean-François Treves (born April 23, 1930 in Brussels ) is an Italian-American mathematician who deals with partial differential equations .

Life

Treves received his doctorate in 1958 at the Sorbonne under Laurent Schwartz . He then went to the United States, where he was an assistant professor at Berkeley from 1958 to 1960 . 1961 to 1964 he was an associate professor at Yeshiva University and 1964 to 1970 professor at Purdue University . In 1970 he became a professor at Rutgers University , where he became Robert Adrian Professor in 1984 and retired in 2005.

In 1972 he received the Chauvenet Prize for On local solvability of linear partial differential equations in the AMS Bulletin (vol. 76, 1970, p. 552). From 1962 he investigated the problem with Louis Nirenberg , and they suspected necessary and sufficient conditions which they proved for equations with analytical coefficients in 1969 (Comptes rendus de l'Académie des sciences Paris, vol. 269). The problem was posed to him by Schwartz as early as 1955 for his diploma topic.

In 1977 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1991 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his book Pseudodifferential and Fourier Integral Operators . In 2003 he became an external member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Hamiltonian fields, bicharacteristic strips in relation with existence and regularity of solutions of linear partial differential equations ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . For 2017 he was awarded the Stefan Bergman Prize.
