The Lower Peninsula (English Lower Peninsula (of Michigan) ) is the more southerly of the two main land masses which together form the US state of Michigan form. It is often referred to as the LP (Abbreviation of the English term Lower Peninsula ). The area is bounded by Lake Michigan to the west, Lake Huron to the north and northeast, and the St. Clair River , Lake St. Clair , Detroit River and Lake Erie to the southeast.

The Lower Peninsula has about two-thirds the land area of Michigan, but 97 percent of the total population. The outline of the peninsula is reminiscent of a mitten , with the region east of Saginaw Bay representing the "thumb" as The Thumb .

The Lower Peninsula is usually divided into 4 regions due to geographic and economic aspects. Similar to the Upper Peninsula, the northern part is poorly populated and densely forested. Agricultural use increases towards the south. To the southeast is the Detroit metropolitan area and much of the industry.
