The flag of the US state of Indiana was introduced in 1917.

The flag consists of a golden torch on a blue background, representing freedom and enlightenment; the rays of light represent their far-reaching influence.

The stars represent Indiana's place as the 19th state to join the United States - the 13 outer stars represent the original 13 colonies , the 5 inside represent the next 5 states, and the single, large star above the torch represents Indiana.

history

The flag was introduced by the Indian General Assembly in 1917 as part of the Indian 100th Anniversary Commemoration in 1916. The flag was the winner of a competition sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution . The design is by Paul Hadley from Mooresville , Indiana .
