The flag of the US state of Minnesota consists of the state seal on a royal blue background with a white border and gold trim.

layout

The seal is framed by a wreath of queen women slippers , the state flower of Minnesota. There are three dates in this box: 1858 for the founding of the state, 1819 for the establishment of Fort Snelling as one of the first settlements in the state, and 1883 when the first flag officially became valid. The 19 stars in the box represent Minnesota as the nineteenth state to join the United States with thirteen founding states after it was founded. The biggest star is the "North Star" and thus the state of Minnesota.

history

Normal or de jure version of a flag? Flag of Minnesota 1957-1983

In the run-up to the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, a competition was held to be able to represent the state at the world exhibition with its own state flag. The winning design was submitted by Amelia Hyde Center, which included the state seal with various borders on a white background. The back had a blue background.

Due to the cost of making the flag, a redesign was considered in the middle of the 20th century. A commission formed in 1953 came to the conclusion that the flag should be simplified, blue on both sides and the back should only be a mirror image of the front. Although this proposal met with criticism and a different design with a blue, white and red flag with gold stars was suggested by others, in 1957 Parliament passed the introduction of the new flag. In the 1960s, human rights activists called for the state seal to be changed because it shows a riding Indian fleeing westward from a pioneer. With the adaptation of this, the flag was adapted and slightly changed in 1983.

Since 1989 there have been efforts to replace the flag with a completely new one. However, these have so far been unsuccessful. The critics were further strengthened by the results of a survey of the best and worst flags by the North American Vexillological Association , in which the flag of Minnesota was ranked 67th out of 72 within the United States and Canada.
