The flag of the US state of Iowa was adopted in 1921.

It consists of three vertical stripes (blue, white and red) that illustrate Iowa's history as part of New France .

The image of a bald eagle is taken from Iowa's seal and sits centrally on the white stripe in the middle. He wears a long blue ribbon with the state motto:

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain."

"We value our freedoms and will protect our rights."

Directly below it is the word "IOWA" in red letters .

The flag was adopted in 1921 after it was approved by the Iowa State Council for Defense in May 1917. It was designed in 1917 by Mrs. Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, a Knoxville resident and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution .
