Wednesday June 1, 2005
- Berlin / Germany : The current Sunday question from the polling institute Forsa shows that the CDU and CSU , without the votes of the FDP , have an absolute majority of seats in the Bundestag after the next election . If the votes of the FDP are added, the three parties even get 56% of the votes. Insofar as the survey reflects reality to some extent, the government coalition of the SPD and the Greens , which has existed since 1998, will come to an end in autumn. It was Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) himself who pushed new elections to the Bundestag in May this fall.
- The Hague / Netherlands : In the national referendum on the constitutional treaty of the European Union , 61% of the participants are against the adoption of the treaty. The consultation is not binding, in contrast to the legally binding vote in France on May 29 , which also ended with a vote against the treaty.
- Kandahar / Afghanistan : At least 45 people are killed or injured in a bomb attack.
- Vienna / Austria : In the Ernst Happel Stadium , Austria Wien wins the final of the Austrian Football Cup against Rapid Wien with 3: 1.

- Beirut / Lebanon : The prominent Lebanese journalist Samir Kassir and a passerby are killed in a car bomb attack. A political motive is likely.
- Quedlinburg / Germany : The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education of the Federal States resolves at its meeting to introduce the new features of the German spelling reform from 1996 in the version from 2004 on August 1, 2005. In cases of dispute, however, “tolerance should continue to be practiced”.
- Riga / Latvia : The Latvian Parliament ratifies the European Constitutional Treaty with a clear majority of 71 to 5 votes.

- La Paz / Bolivia : Protests against the government of President Carlos Mesa continue after a referendum proposed by the latter on extended autonomy for the provinces of the country was rejected by the protesters. The opposition calls for the nationalization of natural gas reserves.
- Prien / Germany : A puzzling virus continues to spread in Bavaria . On June 1, 37 children and two teachers who were staying in a youth hostel were hospitalized with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms. Another 21 students and 10 paramedics have now been taken to hospitals with the same symptoms. Salmonella could be ruled out as the cause, the actual cause remains unexplained.

- Washington, DC / United States : The United States Department of Defense admits that urine was spattered on the Quran at the Guantanamo Detention Center in the United States when a guard urinated near an air duct leading to a cell. Several reports had already been made about the abuse of the Koran during prisoner interrogations in the camp.

- Beirut / Lebanon : In the second round of the Lebanese parliamentary elections, the joint list of Hezbollah and Amal wins all 23 seats to be allocated in southern Lebanon, according to unofficial information. A week earlier, Saadeddine Hariri's opposition bloc had won all 19 seats in Beirut.
- Bern / Switzerland : The citizens of Switzerland decide to join the Schengen and Dublin agreements in a referendum . 54.6% of Swiss voters voted for adoption, despite the rejection of the EU constitution in France and the Netherlands the week before.
- Lorsch / Germany : During the first nationwide day of the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites, around 3,000 visitors take part in the central celebration in the Hessian Lorsch Monastery .

- Addis Ababa / Ethiopia : Hundreds of students are arrested after massive protests over alleged electoral fraud in the elections to the Ethiopian parliament at the end of May.
- Baghdad / Iraq : US soldiers shoot a driver from the Iraqi Ministry of Housing. According to eyewitness reports, they shot at the man's car from behind while he was waiting at a traffic light. The dead man was reportedly taken to hospital by his co-driver, who survived the bombardment unscathed.
- Budapest / Hungary : The Budapest Parliament begins elections to succeed President Ferenc Mádl , whose term of office expires in August 2005 . In the third ballot, constitutional lawyer László Sólyom, born on January 3, 1942 in Pécs, was elected by the right-wing opposition.
- The Hague / Netherlands : The International Criminal Court in The Hague announces the start of proceedings to investigate human rights violations in the Sudanese region of Darfur .
- Helsinki / Finland : the beginning of the eighth Underwater Rugby - European Championship in Helsinki (until 10. June 2005) - Today the European Championships in Pirkkola's Sports Park in Finland's capital begins. There are 6 women and 11 men teams taking part, who will fight for the title until next Saturday.
- Kathmandu / Nepal : At least 38 people die in a bomb attack on a public bus in southern Nepal near the capital Kathmandu.
- Moscow / Russia : A Green Party is founded in Russia for the first time ; The figurehead of the Russian Greens is Alexej Jablikow , the former advisor to former Russian President Boris Yeltsin .
- Vatican City : Pope Benedict XVI. in a statement condemns homosexual partnerships as "pseudo- marriages ". He also speaks out against both genetic engineering and abortion .

- Detroit / United States : The American automaker General Motors has announced job cuts of 25,000 employees by 2008 and plant closings for its plants in the USA.
- Munich / Germany : The German Siemens group leaves the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer BenQ its deficit “mobile phone” division. The approximately 6,000 employees will be taken over by BenQ.
- Taipei / Taiwan : The Taiwanese National Assembly decides to reform the country's constitution, on which a referendum is to be held. The reform would decisively strengthen the drive for independence from the People's Republic of China .

- Addis Ababa / Ethiopia : Over 20 people died in violent protests against the government when the police opened fire on demonstrators throwing stones.
- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Government announces its readiness to waive the right of veto for at least 15 years if the Federal Republic receives a permanent seat on the UN Security Council .
- Brussels / Belgium : EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn announces the postponement of the start of accession negotiations with the Republic of Croatia . The reason given is difficulties related to the extradition of suspected war criminals to the UN tribunal in The Hague .
- Pyongyang / North Korea : After negotiations in New York, North Korea agreed to resume six-party talks with the USA , Russia , People's Republic of China , South Korea and Japan after a break of almost a year on condition that the USA waived political threats. In February the country announced that it already had nuclear weapons .
- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament is examining possible consequences of the rejection of the EU Constitution in the referendums in France and the Netherlands . The agenda also includes negotiations on the EU budget up to 2007.

- La Paz / Bolivia : The Bolivian Congress elects the President of the Supreme Court, Eduardo Rodríguez , as interim president to succeed the resigned Carlos Mesa .
- Spain : The Spanish judge Pedraz has started an investigation against three US soldiers. He suspects her of the murder in connection with the death of Spanish cameraman José Couso on April 8, 2003 in Iraq .
- Vienna / Austria : The National Council today passed an amendment to the constitutional law so that the Carinthian Federal Councilor Siegfried Kampl does not automatically become chairman on July 1, 2005.

- Berlin / Germany : The election alternative Work & Social Justice ( WASG ) and the PDS agree on an alliance for the early 2005 Bundestag election in September.
- Darmstadt / Germany : The German Academy for Language and Poetry awards the Georg Büchner Prize to the author Brigitte Kronauer .
- London / United Kingdom : The finance ministers of the G-8 countries , World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz and EU economic commissioner Almunia meet in London to discuss a British-American proposal for debt relief for the poorest countries. The plan provides for total waiver by the World Bank , the African Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund .
- Shanghai / China : The European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and the Chinese Minister for Economic Affairs Bo Xilai reach an agreement in the “textile dispute” between the EU and China with the “ Shanghai Agreement ” .
Saturday June 11, 2005
- Baghdad / Iraq : Terrorists kill around 30 people nationwide, mostly civilians, including numerous children. US soldiers shoot two Iraqi security company employees. A US military spokesman said the soldiers fired warning shots because it drove too slowly in front of a convoy's lead vehicle. The Iraqis then opened fire on the convoy and were killed in the ensuing skirmish.
- London / United Kingdom : The G-8 countries agree on debt relief for the world's poorest countries. The affected 18, mostly African states, will thus be freed from a total of 40 billion US dollars in debt. The aim of this largest debt relief to date is to combat famine, poverty and disease, especially in Africa.

- Beirut / Lebanon : The third date of the parliamentary elections (four Sundays since May 29 ) took place in the central mountain region. Here the Christians gained the majority (in contrast to the Muslim south of the country).

- Munich / Germany : Dieter Rampl, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of HypoVereinsbank, signs the contract that includes the takeover of HypoVereinsbank by UniCredit (Italy).
- Pakistan : The Pakistani military and police arrested around 250 employees of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) over the weekend on charges of illegal strike actions. The employees are on strike against the planned privatization of their company and for more wages.
- Santa Maria / United States : Pop star Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges by the jury in the child abuse trial.
- Washington, DC / United States : The US Supreme Court has against a black in Texas imposed for death sentence because of racial discrimination repealed because the prosecutor in selecting the jury in the underlying process ten had declined by eleven black potential jurors without explanation.

- Cape Town / South Africa : In a special session of the National Assembly, President Thabo Mbeki removes Vice-President Jacob Zuma from office on suspicion of corruption.
- Zurich / Switzerland : At a press conference at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), the surgeon Marko Turina admits that he misunderstood the blood type of a donor heart in a telephone conversation with patient Voser. The subsequent transplant ended with the death of the patient. All security checks have failed.

- Cologne / Germany : Argentina defeated African champions Tunisia 2-1 in the opening game of the FIFA Confederations Cup . In the other group game, hosts Germany achieved a 4-3 win over Australia in Frankfurt am Main .

- Hamburg , Cologne / Germany : In protest against the planned tuition fees and with the demand for better education, around 10,000 people demonstrate in downtown Hamburg. At the University of Cologne , where students from some faculties suspended their studies under the catchphrase “strike”, a general assembly took place yesterday at which Rector Axel Freimuth did not want to guarantee the waiver of tuition fees. The students are now intensifying their protest.
- Paris / France : At the 46th International Aviation Exhibition in Le Bourget near Paris, which has been taking place since Monday , the total volume of new orders from the two major corporations Airbus and Boeing has reached 40 billion US dollars.

- Bern / Switzerland : After three years, the Federal Assembly adopts the federal law on measures to combat illegal work presented by the Federal Council . For 2001, the Federal Council assumed that undeclared work would amount to 9.3% of Swiss gross national income .
- Ramadi / Iraq : A bomb attack in the city of Ramadi kills five US soldiers. In response, local residents report, the US Army fired grenades at a minibus. Eight women and girls are killed in the process.
- Tehran / Iran : The voters in Iran elect a new president who will succeed the reformer Mohammad Chatemi, who has been in office since 1997 . Chatemi is no longer allowed to run after two four-year terms. The greatest prospects of success are attributed to Ali-Akbar Hāschemi Rafsanjāni , who held the presidency from 1989-1997. Several reform candidates were not allowed to vote.

- Beirut / Lebanon : the democratic-nationalist electoral alliance led by Saad Hariri , son of the February 2005 killed former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri , wins in the elections to Parliament , an absolute majority of 72 seats in the 128-seat Lebanese parliament. Hezbollah and Amal get 35 and ex-General Michel Aoun's party 21 seats.
- Indianapolis / United States : In Formula 1 , only the three Bridgestone teams Ferrari , Jordan and Minardi with two vehicles each start at the US Grand Prix due to non-racing tires from Michelin . The starting field is the smallest in Formula 1. The German Michael Schumacher wins the race.
- Klettwitz / Germany : After 25 years of music history and in front of an estimated 160,000 fans, the Böhsen Onkelz ended their last concert at the Lausitzring .

- Beirut / Lebanon : The former head of the Communist Party, George Hawi , is killed in another bomb attack on a prominent Lebanese politician .

- Düsseldorf / Germany : The North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament elects Jürgen Rüttgers ( CDU ) as the 9th Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia with a majority of the votes of the CDU and FDP members . Rüttgers received 2 votes fewer than the coalition has seats in the NRW state parliament.
- Switzerland : All SBB trains stopped shortly before 6 p.m. after the voltage had dropped from 15,000 to 12,000 volts . According to SBB, the cause of the incident was a power line damaged during construction work. Rail traffic only slowly returned to normal after 9:30 p.m.

- Tehran / Iran : In the run-off election for the Iranian presidency, the candidate of the conservative camp and previous mayor of Tehran, Mahmud Ahmadinejad , triumphs over former incumbent Ali Akbar Hāschemi Rafsanjāni , who was previously considered a favorite .
- Ulsan / South Korea : The moratorium on commercial whaling will remain in place after the 57th session of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). The “anti-whaling faction” in the IWC benefited from the first-time participation of newly acceding countries, including the Czech Republic and Slovakia .

- Klagenfurt / Austria : Thomas Lang wins the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for the text Am Seil.
- Rustaqu / Afghanistan : Two members of the ISAF contingent of the German armed forces and six civilians are killed in an explosion in an ammunition dump in northeast Afghanistan near Kunduz, and others are seriously injured.
- Sofia / Bulgaria : In the parliamentary elections in Bulgaria, the opposition socialists are forecast to emerge as the strongest force with around 32% of the vote. The previous ruling party “National Movement” falls back to around 20%.

- The Hague / Netherlands : Princess Máxima gave birth to a healthy daughter at 2:40 p.m. (CEST) in the Bronovo Hospital. It is the second child of the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and the fifth grandchild of Queen Beatrix . The little princess was given the name Alexia Juliana Marcela Laurentien . The nickname is Alexia (after her father).
- Mannheim / Germany : Gerald Ciolek ( Team Akud ) is the surprise winner at the German road cycling championships . The 18-year-old surprisingly beats Robert Förster ( Team Gerolsteiner ) and Erik Zabel ( Team T-Mobile ) in the finish sprint . Regina Schleicher from the Nürnberger team won the women’s race .

- Baghdad / Iraq : Soldiers of the United States Armed Forces kill the program director of a Baghdad television station when he tried to get into an accident with his car. A television journalist was only killed by US soldiers on Sunday.
- London / United Kingdom : The House of Commons resolves with 314 votes to 283 to reintroduce the identity card, which is also to contain biometric data .
- Moscow / Russia : In Moscow, China , the European Union , Japan , Russia, South Korea and the USA agree that one of the most expensive research projects on nuclear fusion, the " Iter " test reactor , should be built in Cadarache in the south of France .
- Vatican City : The beatification process for Pope John Paul II begins. At the request of his successor Pope Benedict XVI. initiated before the usual period of five years has expired.
- Yaren / Nauru : The Nauru government defends its vote in favor of commercial whaling by Parliamentarian Marcus Stephen at the IWC annual conference. UN ambassador Marlene Moses says Australia's severe criticism of Nauru is undermining the sovereignty of the Pacific island nation. Moses justified the Nauruan vote with the fact that Nauru wanted to protect its tuna stocks , which are threatened by whales . The Nauruan economy and the population are largely dependent on fishing . According to Moses, the matter was handled carefully and responsibly in the government in order to secure the best outcome for its own people.
