George Hawi (or Haoui , Arabic جورج حاوي Jūrdsch Ḥāwī , born November 5, 1938 in Bteghrine ; † June 21, 2005 in Beirut , Lebanon ) was a Lebanese politician and head of the Lebanese Communist Party (LKP)between 1979 and 1990.

Hawi was born into a Greek Orthodox Christian family. His Communist Party had been anti-Syrian since 1976, when Syria prevented the possible victory of a "left front" (the LKP and PLO, e.g. with the Druze PSP ) against right-wing Christian militias ( Phalange , FL ).

In 1987 the fighting escalated again when the then barely 700-strong KP militia, with Hawi's consent, attacked the Shiite Amal militia, allied with Syria (up to 20,000 men at that time) with Hawi's consent , and only through the timely intervention of the PSP militia was saved from destruction. However, before the PSP could drive the Amal out of West Beirut, Syrian troops intervened again and , against the energetic protest of then President Amin Gemayel, occupied positions in the capital, which brought the militia back to their original positions.

Hawi was killed in a bomb attack on his car in the Beirut district of Wata Musaitbi in 2005 .
