  • Solar system : The “impactor” of the American comet probe Deep Impact collides with the comet Tempel 1 as planned . The released matter cloud is observed by telescopes and measuring devices all over the world. The evaluation of the data obtained will take several years.

  • Birmingham / United Kingdom : The entertainment district and Chinatown are evacuated by the police. There was a serious threat of assassination.
  • Caribbean : A tropical cyclone causes severe flooding in the Caribbean. At least 20 people are killed in the Greater Antilles and more than 100 are missing. The storm continues towards Florida.
  • Khartoum / Sudan : Following a constitutional amendment, the previous rebel leader John Garang is sworn in as the country's vice-president, and oil-rich South Sudan is granted limited autonomy. The agreement aims to end the more than 20-year civil war between the central government and the separatists of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA).

  • Geneva / Switzerland : The Geneva University Institute for International Studies presented a new study according to which 39,000 locals were killed in the US-led invasion of Iraq . Two other sources speak of 26,000 dead. The British medical journal The Lancet , on the other hand, has even determined 100,000 dead civilians.
  • Monaco / Monaco: Albert Grimaldi was named Albert II Prince of Monaco as the successor to his father Rainier III. enthroned . After the solemn mass there was a folk festival and a public ball in the evening.

  • Berlin / Germany : Federal President Horst Köhler declares the dissolution of the 15th German Bundestag and orders early elections on September 18th.
  • Yemen : Unrest continues following the government's increase in oil prices . Four people died in clashes between armed demonstrators and security forces in the city of al-Dali (almost 500,000 inhabitants), 250 kilometers south of the capital Sana'a . Ten people were also injured. The number of deaths from these unrest rises to 25.
  • London / United Kingdom : Unconfirmed reports suggest that a backpack exploded in a London Underground station, injuring one person. Three subway stations have been evacuated and several subway lines have ceased operations. An explosion in a bus was also reported.

  • New York / United States : A humanitarian disaster is taking place in Zimbabwe as a result of forced relocation by the Zimbabwean government. This emerges from a report that Anna Tibaijuka , Executive Director of the United Nations Housing and Settlement Program ( UN-Habitat ) and special envoy of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan , presented on July 20. The government called the resettlements " Operation Murambatsvina ".
  • Sharm el-Sheikh / Egypt : According to the latest official information, at least 88 people were killed and over 200 injured in several explosions in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on the night of July 22nd to 23rd, 2005.

  • Augsburg / Germany : In their testimony before the Augsburg Regional Court, the former Federal Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and the former Federal Finance Minister Theo Waigel exonerated the former Defense State Secretary Ludwig-Holger Pfahls , who was responsible for the delivery of German Fuchs anti-tank vehicles to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia u. a. is on trial for bribery. Pfahls' influence on the business was minimal, both witnesses said during their testimony. The main responsibility rests with the government officials at the time, i. H. mostly located with Chancellor Helmut Kohl .
  • Cape Canaveral / United States : Today at 10:39 a.m. local time (4:39 p.m. CEST) the space shuttle Discovery took off from the Cape Canaveral spaceport . With her seven astronauts set off for the International Space Station .
  • New Delhi / India : After serious clashes between police officers and striking workers at a Honda plant in Gurgaon, a district of the Indian capital New Delhi, the riots continue on Tuesday. India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh disapproved of the behavior of police officers in Gurgaon who hit protesters with bamboo sticks.

  • Graubünden / Switzerland : A brown bear has been spotted in the wild at the Ofen Pass in the Swiss National Park . The last animal living in Switzerland was shot in 1904 . The last time an immigrant bear was sighted was in 1923 .
  • Kampala / Uganda : A nationwide referendum is being held in Uganda on the introduction of a multi-party system. When President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni came to power in 1986, he introduced a “non-party system”. The influence of political parties has been very limited since then.
  • United Kingdom : The IRA announces the end of the armed struggle.
  • In the morning around 7:50 a.m. in Hamburg, Osdorf district, a savings bank was attacked. The perpetrator had taken a cleaner hostage. Traffic was cut off; the police are on site with a mobile task force [Q: N-TV.de]. The hostage-taking ended bloodlessly around noon after the hostage-taker had surrendered voluntarily.
  • It is announced that Jürgen Schrempp will leave the DaimlerChrysler Group at the end of the year. His successor as CEO will be Dieter Zetsche .
  • The space shuttle Discovery docked with the International Space Station (ISS) without any problems . The sides of the space shuttle were photographed beforehand to document possible damage. Since no major problems are discovered, nothing stands in the way of a return to Earth, otherwise the crew would have had to stay on the ISS; the supplies are sufficient for max. a month off.

  • Isfahan , Tehran / Iran : Iran claims to be building nuclear weapons again. The International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna expressed concern, but the representatives of some European countries, including Joschka Fischer from Germany , want to continue to rely on the strategy of diplomatic exchange.
  • Cairo / Egypt : On Saturday, a rally in downtown Cairo was violently ended by opponents of Egyptian President Muhammad Husni Mubarak . Police officers and government supporters hit demonstrators with clubs. Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt since 1981, announced on Thursday that he would run again in the presidential election in September.
  • Montreal / Canada : The 11th World Swimming Championships the FINA going to end. Two German participants each win a gold medal, Mark Warnecke over 50 m chest and Thomas Lurz over 5,000 m.
