- Berlin / Germany : The German Bundestag expresses mistrust to Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , who asked the vote of confidence in accordance with Article 68 of the Basic Law in order to obtain early elections for the Bundestag 151 MPs vote yes, 296 no, 148 abstain.
- Berlin / Germany : The German Spelling Council concludes the complex of separate and combined spelling . In the future, it is not grammatical logic that will decide, but language usage. This means that more can be written together than in the spelling reform of the 1990s.
- London / United Kingdom : The country takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Luxembourg . As in 1998, the office of Prime Minister of the EC went to Tony Blair .
- Vienna / Austria : With the amalgamation of the police and the gendarmerie , one of the largest administrative reforms of the 2nd Republic takes place.

- Baghdad / Iraq : The Iraqi UN ambassador Samir al-Sumaidaie accuses the American army of having "murdered his cousin in cold blood". Mohammed al-Sumaidaie was killed by a shot in the neck during a house search in Ramadi by US soldiers last week.
- Johannesburg / South Africa : Former President Nelson Mandela appears at the Live 8 benefit concert , a new edition of Live Aid (1985). On the same day Live 8 concerts will take place in Chiba , Barrie , Berlin , Edinburgh , Moscow , London , Paris , Philadelphia , Rome and on the grounds of the Eden Project in St Blazey. Initiator Bob Geldof sees the events as an appeal against the indebtedness of African countries.
- London / United Kingdom : American Venus Williams wins the women's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships in tennis against her compatriot Lindsay Davenport .

- Baghdad / Iraq : The Iraqi government confirms British newspaper reports about torture of Sunni prisoners. They are a consequence of the Saddam regime.
- London / United Kingdom : In the final of the men's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships , there is a new edition of the previous year's final . Defending champion Roger Federer from Switzerland defeats Andy Roddick from the USA again , this time in three sets.
- Tirana / Albania : The Democratic Party of opposition leader Sali Berisha wins the parliamentary elections in Albania .

- Solar system : The “impactor” of the American comet probe Deep Impact collides with the comet Tempel 1 as planned . The released matter cloud is observed by telescopes and measuring devices all over the world. The evaluation of the data obtained will take several years.

- Auchterarder / United Kingdom : The heads of state of the Group of Eight and the President of the European Commission meet for the 31st World Economic Summit at the Gleneagles Hotel .
- Singapore / Singapore: The IOC is London to host the 30th Summer Olympic Games in 2012 known.
- Strasbourg / France : The controversial European Commission's directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions has been rejected by the European Parliament with a large majority of 648 of the 680 MPs who are entitled to vote.

- London / United Kingdom : In a series of four terrorist attacks , over 50 people die in London and around 700 are injured.

- Berlin / Germany : In the 55th ceremony of the German Film Prize is Alles auf Zucker! Awarded as best film by director Dani Levy .

- Birmingham / United Kingdom : The entertainment district and Chinatown are evacuated by the police. There was a serious threat of assassination.
- Caribbean : A tropical cyclone causes severe flooding in the Caribbean. At least 20 people are killed in the Greater Antilles and more than 100 are missing. The storm continues towards Florida.
- Khartoum / Sudan : Following a constitutional amendment, the previous rebel leader John Garang is sworn in as the country's vice-president, and oil-rich South Sudan is granted limited autonomy. The agreement aims to end the more than 20-year civil war between the central government and the separatists of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA).

- Abu Dhabi / United Arab Emirates : The central bank of the United Arab Emirates has announced that it will increasingly invest its foreign exchange reserves in euros . The euro then rises from well below 1.20 US dollars to 1.209 dollars and thus again exceeds the exchange rate level 1.2045, which was temporarily reached immediately after the terrorist attacks became known on July 7, 2005 in London .
- Berlin / Germany : The federal executive committee of the CDU and the party executive committee of the CSU present a government program for the case of an election victory in the upcoming federal election , u. a. to the employment protection for companies with fewer than 20 employees account for new hires, there are the wage costs are reduced and the wage and income tax of the intended tax rate to 12% and the top tax rate be reduced to 39%.

- Geneva / Switzerland : The Geneva University Institute for International Studies presented a new study according to which 39,000 locals were killed in the US-led invasion of Iraq . Two other sources speak of 26,000 dead. The British medical journal The Lancet , on the other hand, has even determined 100,000 dead civilians.
- Monaco / Monaco: Albert Grimaldi was named Albert II Prince of Monaco as the successor to his father Rainier III. enthroned . After the solemn mass there was a folk festival and a public ball in the evening.

- Yemen : Unrest continues following the government's increase in oil prices . Four people died in clashes between armed demonstrators and security forces in the city of al-Dali (almost 500,000 inhabitants), 250 kilometers south of the capital Sana'a . Ten people were also injured. The number of deaths from these unrest rises to 25.
- London / United Kingdom : Unconfirmed reports suggest that a backpack exploded in a London Underground station, injuring one person. Three subway stations have been evacuated and several subway lines have ceased operations. An explosion in a bus was also reported.

- Geneva / Switzerland : According to a report from the Chinese health minister to the World Health Organization, the bacterium Streptococcus suis , which circulates in pigs, has been identified as the cause of an infectious disease that killed several people in southwest China . - Augsburg / Germany : In their testimony before the Augsburg Regional Court, the former Federal Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and the former Federal Finance Minister Theo Waigel exonerated the former Defense State Secretary Ludwig-Holger Pfahls , who was responsible for the delivery of German Fuchs anti-tank vehicles to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia u. a. is on trial for bribery. Pfahls' influence on the business was minimal, both witnesses said during their testimony. The main responsibility rests with the government officials at the time, i. H. mostly located with Chancellor Helmut Kohl .

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh disapproved of the behavior of police officers in Gurgaon who hit protesters with bamboo sticks.

- Kampala / Uganda : A nationwide referendum is being held in Uganda on the introduction of a multi-party system. When President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni came to power in 1986, he introduced a “non-party system”. The influence of political parties has been very limited since then.
- United Kingdom : The IRA announces the end of the armed struggle.
- In the morning around 7:50 a.m. in Hamburg, Osdorf district, a savings bank was attacked. The perpetrator had taken a cleaner hostage. Traffic was cut off; the police are on site with a mobile task force [Q: N-TV.de]. The hostage-taking ended bloodlessly around noon after the hostage-taker had surrendered voluntarily.
- It is announced that Jürgen Schrempp will leave the DaimlerChrysler Group at the end of the year. His successor as CEO will be Dieter Zetsche .
- The space shuttle Discovery docked with the International Space Station (ISS) without any problems . The sides of the space shuttle were photographed beforehand to document possible damage.
