- Assam / India : In the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park the police and the armed forces start a major offensive against armed fighters of the United Liberation Front of Assam .
- Berlin / Germany : Michael Schindhelm takes over the general management of the newly created Foundation Opera in Berlin to manage the three Berlin opera houses and the State Ballet .

- Austria : Top officials of the smaller ruling party FPÖ , including the chairwoman Ursula Haubner and her brother Jörg Haider , resign from the party and found the new party Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ).
- Vatican City : The College of Cardinals fixes the funeral of Pope John Paul II , who died on April 2nd, on Friday, April 8th. Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles are postponing their wedding to Saturday, April 9th.

- Amman / Jordan : In Jordan, Adnan Badran is appointed new Prime Minister; Predecessor Faisal al-Fajes resigned after criticism from King Abdullah II .
- Baghdad / Iraq : Jalal Talabani is elected as the new president by the parliament of Iraq.
- Berlin / Germany : The central German funeral service for Pope John Paul II takes place in Berlin under the direction of Cardinal Lehmann.
- Vatican City : The cardinals open the will of the late Pope and set its publication for the next day, the beginning of the conclave on April 18th . A million people are now crowding into kilometer-long queues in front of the dead man laid out. In the evening, US President Bush arrives at St. Peter's Basilica.

- Baghdad / Iraq : The presidential council of Iraq, which has now been sworn in, instructs Ibrahim al-Jafari to form a new government.
Friday April 8, 2005
- Pacific : Along a narrow strip that extends from New Zealand to Venezuela , a hybrid solar eclipse occurs , which is visible from the South Pacific as an annular eclipse, later as a total and from Central and South America again as an annular eclipse.
- Vatican City : Pope John Paul II is buried in camera in the caves of St. Peter's Basilica in the afternoon. Before that, a solemn requiem took place at 10:00 a.m. local time , attended by around 4 million people, including numerous heads of state and government, representatives of other Christian churches as well as Jewish and Muslim representatives.

- Bregenz / Austria : In the municipal council and mayoral elections in Vorarlberg , the ÖVP achieved 45.4% of the votes, followed by the SPÖ (15.6%), FPÖ (11.5%), Greens (7.0%) and others Political parties (together 20.4%). After the elimination of compulsory voting, the turnout fell to 65.0% compared to 88.8% in the last election.
- Neuchâtel / Switzerland : In the elections to the cantonal parliament of Neuchâtel , the left ( SPS , GPS , PdA , Sol ) win a wafer-thin majority of just one seat. Neuchâtel is the second Swiss canton with a left parliamentary majority after Basel-Stadt .
- Beijing / China : In China's capital Beijing, 20,000 people demonstrate against a Japanese textbook; in it u. a. the Nanking Massacre downplayed.
- Sumatra / Indonesia : Off the coast of Sumatra, about 100 km south of the city of Padang , another violent earthquake occurs ; the strength was 6.7 on the Richter scale .
- Weimar / Germany : A central commemoration ceremony for the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp is taking place in the German National Theater in Weimar .

- Düsseldorf / Germany : Prime Minister Peer Steinbrück ( SPD ) questions his party's government coalition with the Greens six weeks before the next state election in North Rhine-Westphalia .
- New Delhi / India : India and the People's Republic of China sign a treaty aimed at settling longstanding border disputes in the Himalayan mountains. The agreed clarification would end a conflict that has been simmering since 1962 and is seen in both countries as an important step on the way to better bilateral relations.
- Redmond / United States : The software and hardware manufacturer Microsoft is suing eight computer manufacturers and dealers in seven US states over the distribution of counterfeit and unlicensed Microsoft software and software components .
- Tokyo / Japan : A severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 M w shakes the Tokyo area. The epicenter is 60 km underground near Tokyo.

- Brussels / Belgium : The European Commission declares its readiness to start negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro on the country's accession to the European Union .
- Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the police use GPS tracking devices for the purpose of observing suspects as legal.
- Oslo / Norway : The governments of 60 countries agree at a donor conference to provide the North African state of Sudan with 3.47 billion euros for the reconstruction of the southern parts of the country. For years, civil war raged in southern Sudan between the Arabs who dominated the state and the local black population.

- Beirut / Lebanon : The Lebanese Prime Minister Omar al-Karami submits his resignation again after failed efforts to form a government.
- Strasbourg / France : The European Parliament votes with a large majority for the planned admission of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union in January 2007.

- Berlin / Germany : The cycling - Team Gerolsteiner announced after a positive doping -Befund in the B-sample to the stimulant phenylpiracetam the contract with his driver Danilo Hondo , who this year second in the cycling race Milan-San Remo was.
- Prague / Czech Republic : Two ministers of the Czech government resign, so the cabinet of Prime Minister Stanislav Gross is in dissolution.
- Redmond / United States : The software and hardware manufacturer Microsoft enables visitors to its online encyclopedia Encarta to edit entries on a trial basis. The content will continue to be looked after by permanently employed editors.
- Strasbourg / France : Members of the European Parliament vote 431 to 85 against lifting the arms embargo on China .

- Baikonur / Kazakhstan : At 2.46 a.m. CEST , the Russian spacecraft Soyuz TMA-6 took off for the International Space Station (ISS). Crew of the Soyuz TMA-6: Sergei Krikaljow ( Russia ), John Phillips ( USA ), Roberto Vittori ( Italy ).
- Berlin / Germany : Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer agrees to a live video transmission of his testimony to the committee of inquiry into the visa affair .
- Islamabad / Pakistan : Around 17,800 members of the Pakistani People's Party (PPP) of former President Benazir Bhutto are arrested for "violating the right of assembly". Bhutto lives in exile in the United Arab Emirates and her husband Asif Zardari is imprisoned in Pakistan.
- London / United Kingdom : The only remaining potential investor in the last, independent British (mass) car manufacturer MG Rover cancels the British government, thus sealing the fate of the traditional company and filing for bankruptcy inevitable.
- Munich / Germany : The Bavarian Minister of Culture Monika Hohlmeier resigns.
- Paris / France : At least 20 people are killed and over 60 injured in a fire in a Paris hotel.

- Essen / Germany : The world's first twin marathon starts in Dortmund as well as in Oberhausen , both routes meet in Gelsenkirchen and have the city of Essen as their common goal. In total, over 30,000 people take part in the event.
- New York / United States : The Dow Jones stock market index recorded 3.57%, the largest weekly decline since the beginning of the war in Iraq in March 2003 .
- Quito / Ecuador : Ecuador's President Lucio Gutiérrez dismisses the Supreme Court after mass rallies and strikes and imposes a state of emergency on the capital.
- Turkey : A total of 26 fighters from both sides are killed in skirmishes between Turkish troops and Kurds in southeastern Turkey.

- Madain / Iraq : Following the storming of the village of Madain by Iraqi soldiers, the whereabouts of the up to 150 kidnapping victims allegedly held there remains unclear.
- Sydney / Australia : The Australian representative of the UN Refugee Commission Neil Wright asks the Australian government for a humanitarian solution for the remaining 54 asylum seekers in the Nauru Detention Center in Meneng . Wright said the asylum seekers were desperate and isolated, which gave them no hope of a future. More than 1,200 asylum seekers have been temporarily detained in the Nauru Detention Center since 2001 .

- Oxford / United Kingdom : Oxford University announces that new infrared technology will make it possible to read up to 400,000 ancient documents in their library. These include lost, incomplete and unknown works. The documents come, among other things, from the finds from the Egyptian Oxyrhynchus . Classical scholars speak of the "beginning of a second renaissance ".
- San José / United States : Adobe Inc. takes over Macromedia for 3.4 billion US dollars .
- Sudan : Bundeswehr soldiers are to be deployed in the crisis region of Darfur if the African Union's AMIS mission fails.
- Vatican City : With a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica and the entry into the Sistine Chapel to begin Cardinals the conclave to determine the successor to Pope John Paul II. Black smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel signaled at 20.00 that the first ballot, not the required two -Third majority provided.
- Wiesbaden / Germany : The former Federal Minister of the Interior Manfred Kanther is sentenced to a suspended sentence of 18 months and a fine of 25,000 euros for his role in the CDU donation affair .

- Berlin / Germany : The Eisbären Berlin become German champions in ice hockey after they win the third final game against Adler Mannheim with 4-1.
- Rome / Italy : After the UDC leaves the Italian government coalition, four ministers resign. Prime Minister Berlusconi rules out new elections. He announced that he would put the vote of confidence in the Italian parliament .
- Stuttgart / Germany : The Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Erwin Teufel resigns from his office. His successor is to be elected on April 27th .
- Vatican City : 5:50 p.m. white smoke rises over the Sistine Chapel and the bells of St. Peter's Basilica , Rome and other places around the world begin to ring. After the fourth ballot , Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was chosen as the new Pope . He gives himself the name Benedict XVI. The conclave lasted just under 26 hours.
- Vienna / Austria : The pharmaceutical company Sandoz International GmbH announces that it its headquarters from Vienna to the German Holzkirchen in Upper Bavaria is embarrassed.

- Athens / Greece : The Greek Parliament votes with a large majority for the ratification of the European Constitutional Treaty .
- Baghdad / Iraq : An attack is carried out on Iraqi Prime Minister Allawi , who is still in office , and a policeman is killed.
- Quito / Ecuador : The national crisis in Ecuador comes to a head, parliament declares President Gutiérrez deposed.
- Rome / Italy : The Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi submits his resignation, President Ciampi refuses to accept and calls for the reshuffle of the existing government.

- Washington, DC / United States : American politician John Negroponte is sworn into the newly created office of Director of National Intelligence .

- Addis Ababa / Ethiopia : The second of three parts of a 1,700 year old obelisk and Ethiopian national symbol is being returned to Ethiopia by Italy .
- Alexandria / United States : In a court in Alexandria (Virginia), Zacarias Moussaoui pleads guilty to allegations of involvement in the planning for the terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001.
- Quito / Ecuador : The deposed Ecuadorian President Gutiérrez is granted asylum by Brazil .
- Rome / Italy : Prime Minister Berlusconi filled four new ministerial posts after the resignations on Tuesday, ending the government crisis in Italy.
- San Bruno / United States : The video portal YouTube is provided with the first video in its history when Jawed Karim uploads the clip Me at the zoo .

- Beirut / Lebanon : The last convoy of Syrian troops stationed in the country since 1976 is leaving Lebanon.
- Lomé / Togo : The voters elect a new president after the death of Gnassingbé Eyadéma and the meanwhile assumption of office by his son Faure Gnassingbé .
- Vatican City : With the German Joseph Ratzinger, the new head of the Roman Catholic Church is introduced in succession to Pope John Paul II . For his office he chose the name Benedict XVI.

- Amagasaki / Japan : In the worst train accident in Japan for more than 40 years, at least 50 people are killed in the city of Amagasaki near Osaka when a passenger train derails and two of its cars crash into a residential building. According to the police, the actual number of victims may be far higher than previously known.
- Brussels / Belgium : On April 25, 2005, the European Union co-signed the declarations of membership for Romania and Bulgaria . Both states are expected to join the EU on January 1, 2007. The EU will thus consist of 27 states.
- Copenhagen / Denmark : The Danish royal family reports that Crown Princess Mary is pregnant. The birth is predicted for October. Nothing is known about the sex of the child.

- Lebanon , Syria : As announced by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad , the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon begins . The Syrian presence in Lebanon dates back to 1976.
- Mandalay / Myanmar : Two women are killed in a bomb attack in Mandalay, the second largest city in the country and former royal seat, and at least 16 other people are injured. Representatives of the ruling military blamed “dissidents and saboteurs” for similar attacks carried out in recent months .

- Kiel / Germany : The state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein elects Peter Harry Carstensen ( CDU ) as prime minister for the first time . In March, his predecessor Heide Simonis ( SPD ) failed in the secret election as head of government. It is still unknown which mandate holder Simonis refused to vote.
- Toulouse / France : The new superjumbo Airbus A380 has successfully completed its maiden flight . With up to 800 seats, it displaced the largest passenger aircraft to date, the Boeing 747 .

- Baghdad / Iraq : The National Assembly in Iraq confirms the new government established by Ibrahim al-Jafari .
- Berlin / Germany : Chancellor Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) met today with the state leaders of Bavaria ( Edmund Stoiber , CSU ), Baden-Württemberg ( Günther Oettinger , CDU ), Rhineland-Palatinate ( Kurt Beck , SPD) and Berlin ( Klaus Wowereit , SPD) to discuss the ratification of the EU constitution with them. The countries are demanding more say in EU decisions.
- Berlin / Germany : The people responsible for the knowledge commons of the international movement Attac and the online citizens' network Campact are starting a campaign against software patents .
- Lomé / Togo : Serious unrest with up to 50 dead broke out in Togo after Faure Gnassingbés declared himself the winner of the presidential election.
- Munich / Germany : The 2005 Federal Horticultural Show opens on the grounds of the Munich-Riem Airport , which was decommissioned in 1992 .
- Oslo / Norway : In the case of the art theft of the paintings by Edvard Munch , the police now assume that they were burned. This probably also applies to his most famous painting, The Scream .
