Saturday 1st January 2005
- Ankara / Turkey : The New Turkish Lira (YTL) has been the official currency since today. As a result of the currency reform , the bank note with its highest value to date of 20,000,000 TL becomes 20 YTL , which translates to around 11 euros . The highest value of a new note is 100 YTL. The inflation (since 1971 on average over 40%) fell in 2004 to 9%.
- Berlin / Germany : Unemployment benefit II is introduced in Germany, the Hartz IV laws come into effect. In addition, truck drivers now have to pay tolls on the highways using the new system. The third stage of the 2000 tax reform comes into force.
- Bern / Switzerland : SVP politician Samuel Schmid becomes Federal President of Switzerland.
- Brussels / Belgium : The EU emissions trading scheme comes into force in the European Union .
- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : The country takes over the presidency of the European Union from the Netherlands .
- New York / United States : Argentina , Denmark , Greece , Japan and Tanzania are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .
- Vienna / Austria : The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic combines this year with the musical greeting to all the world the request that the victims of the tsunami of December 26th. actively to commemorate. This is also reflected in the program. For the first time eliminated a traditional addition: The Radetzky March by Johann Strauss .

- Bern / Switzerland : A national day of mourning and a national collection day in favor of the earthquake victims is being celebrated. The nationwide collection of Swiss Solidarity generates a record sum of over CHF 220 million for the benefit of the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : Janne Ahonen from Finland wins the 53rd Four Hills Tournament ahead of Roar Ljøkelsøy from Norway .
- Washington, DC / United States : The US Defense Department announced a prisoner at the detention center for a new investigation into allegations of ill-treatment Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo Bay ( Cuba on).

- Bologna / Italy : At least 13 people were killed in a collision between a passenger and a freight train near Bolognina di Crevalcore, about 40 km north of Bologna.
- Philadelphia / United States : According to reports from various newspapers, one of the alleged perpetrators is being charged with murder in the US state of Mississippi 40 years after the murders of three civil rights activists by members of the Ku Klux Klan . The now 79-year-old was acquitted in 1967 because the jury had a tie.

- Chemnitz / Germany : The Kastelruther Spatzen win their fifth folk music crown .
- Cuxhaven / Germany : The alleged murderer of the girl Levke also killed the boy Felix from Neu Ebersdorf ( district of Rotenburg (Wümme) ), who had been missing for two months , as he confessed to his lawyer. The police found Felix's body on Friday in the Geeste river near Schiffdorf ( Cuxhaven district ) following information from the suspect .
- Northern Europe : A hurricane rages over Northern Europe with high wind speeds and sometimes very heavy downpours . Several people die in Denmark and Sweden , and in Germany, too, drivers were killed by falling trees. The ferry and air traffic in some Scandinavian countries had to be stopped. In Schleswig-Holstein the train service was also stopped. In Great Britain and Ireland , 50,000 and 60,000 people are without electricity.

- Nairobi / Kenya : In Nairobi a peace treaty is signed between the government of Sudan under Omar al-Bashir and the South Sudanese rebels under John Garang . The agreement ends the longest civil war on the African continent (it lasted over 20 years and cost 1.5 million lives) and provides for autonomy for the southern provinces. After six years at the earliest, the south should be given the opportunity to hold an independence referendum .
- Ramallah / Palestinian Territories : Presidential elections have started in the West Bank . The favorite is Mahmud Abbas , chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization PLO .

- Kiev / Ukraine : The Ukrainian electoral commission officially confirms Viktor Yushchenko's victory in the runoff election on December 26th with 51.99%. The Supreme Court had previously dismissed four more lawsuits by the failed presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych for formal errors. However, a complaint against the official final result is still possible before the Supreme Court.
- Ramallah / Palestinian Territories : Mahmud Abbas , chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, declares himself the winner of the presidential elections in the West Bank after claiming two thirds of the votes. Independent election observers so far speak of “clean elections”.
- Rome / Italy : In Italy, a general smoking ban in restaurants and pubs comes into force today . The first fines are said to have been imposed that night.

- Bergen / Germany : A British soldier is sentenced to imprisonment by a military tribunal in his home base in Lower Saxony for participating in the torture of civilians in Iraq . So far, only US soldiers had to answer for similar crimes .
- Kiev / Ukraine : The Supreme Court of Ukraine has again banned the mandatory official publication of the final results of the presidential election due to an urgent motion by the defeated presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych .

- Cape Canaveral / United States : A NASA space probe was successfully launched, which is to collide with comet Tempel 1 in a controlled manner in June in order to obtain information about its internal structure.

- Kenya : Due to the poor security situation in Somalia , the interim cabinet of the neighboring Kenyan country under Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi is confirmed on Kenyan soil. It includes warlords from all major factions in Somalia. With their involvement, Ali Mohammed Ghedi wants to stabilize the country.
- Munich / Germany : The fashion designer Rudolph Moshammer is found dead in his apartment by the driver . Moshammer's dog, Daisy, is doing well and is staying with the driver.
- Titan : The ESA - lander Huygens lands softly on the Saturn - moon Titan and collects data on wind conditions, atmosphere and surface finish. It transmits this to Earth via NASA's Cassini space probe , which is in orbit of Saturn.

- Ramallah / Palestinian Territories : Mahmud Abbas is sworn in as the new Palestinian head of government. He is the successor of the late Yasser Arafat .

- Munich / Germany : The police arrest the alleged murderer in the murder case Rudolph Moshammer . It is a 25-year-old Iraqi who was identified with the help of the genetic database. He confesses to the murder of Rudolph Moshammer, which happened after a dispute over payment for sexual acts.
- Zagreb / Croatia : The Croatian President Stjepan Mesić has been confirmed in office. According to the preliminary result of the runoff election, he won with 66 percent of the vote against Jadranka Kosor .

- Zagreb / Croatia : The second round of the presidential election is taking place in Croatia . Around 4.4 million eligible voters voted in the first ballot, if they went to the vote, with a simple majority for incumbent Stjepan Mesić from the Croatian People's Party , who finally prevailed clearly against Jadranka Kosor from the Croatian Democratic Union in today's runoff election.

- Toulouse / France : The new Airbus A380 , the largest passenger aircraft in the history of aviation, is presented to the public with a large light and laser show.
- Washington, DC / United States : US President George W. Bush does not rule out a military strike against Iran if Tehran does not provide comprehensive information about its nuclear program. The US president told NBC that he hoped for a peaceful solution to the conflict.
- The bad word of 2004 is “ human capital ”.

- Kiev / Ukraine : The Supreme Court of Ukraine declares Yushchenko's election victory after the re- election final. All of Yanukovych's lawsuits have thus been dismissed.
- Paris / France : The country is extraditing the former State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense Ludwig-Holger Pfahl's wanted for corruption and tax evasion to Germany.
- Washington, DC / United States : The Republican President of the United States George W. Bush takes the oath of his second term as US President. His central political concern is to free the world from "tyranny".
- Vienna / Austria : The legislators reach an agreement on the reform of the controversial head physician obligation .

- Göttingen / Germany : Two 15- and 19-year-old schoolchildren from the university town are arrested as the arsonists of the Johanniskirche.
- Kiev / Ukraine : The new Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko appoints Yulia Tymoshenko to the post of Prime Minister.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Only a third of the 3.2 million tickets for the 2006 World Cup will go on sale.
- Los Angeles / United States : The German film Der Untergang is nominated for an Oscar . The fictional film based on a script by producer Bernd Eichinger describes Adolf Hitler's last days in Berlin .
- Mumbai / India : Up to 300 people were killed in a mass panic at the Mandher Devi Temple in West India. The cause was a fire in a market street in the Hindu pilgrimage site, which is currently populated by around 300,000 pilgrims .

- Khartoum / Sudan : Around 100 people are killed in an attack on a village in the West Sudanese crisis province of Darfur . 10,000 people are on the run.
- Porto Alegre / Brazil : The fifth World Social Forum opens with a protest march and calls for a “different world”. Around 100,000 participants want to spend six days discussing the consequences of globalization and neoliberalism , the fight against poverty and the war in Iraq.
- Washington, DC / United States : Condoleezza Rice is confirmed as US Secretary of State by the Senate with a large majority.

- Munich / Germany : Siemens CEO Heinrich von Pierer changes to the supervisory board after more than twelve years at the top of the group . His successor, Klaus Kleinfeld, is faced with the task of bringing low-yield sectors back on the road to success.
- New York / United States : The US consumer goods company Procter & Gamble takes over Gillette . With this transaction, the volume of which is around 57 billion US dollars , Procter & Gamble intends to secure its position ahead of Unilever . The elimination of 6,000 jobs is expected.
