Friday 3rd September 2004

  • Beslan / Russia : Russian security forces storm the school, which has been in the hands of hostage-takers for several days and where around 1,200 people are stuck. The hostage-takers shoot at random from the school, including fleeing children, and set off several explosive devices. At least 331 people are killed and over 700 more are hospitalized after the liberation, including more than 250 children. Most of the hostage-takers are killed and some are arrested. According to official statements after the storm, this was not included in the operational plan and was probably triggered by the escape attempt by some hostage-takers.

  • Bregenz / Austria : In the state elections in Vorarlberg , the ÖVP was able to defend its absolute majority. The FPÖ incurs huge losses and is only the third strongest force behind the SPÖ . The Greens, on the other hand, achieved a double-digit result.
  • Dresden / Germany : In the state elections in the Free State of Saxony , the CDU under Prime Minister Georg Milbradt loses two-digit numbers and cannot hold its absolute majority with only 41.1%. With slight increases to 23.6%, the PDS becomes the second strongest force, far ahead of the SPD , which achieved its worst post-war result in a state election with 9.8% and is just ahead of the right-wing radical NPD , which is in the Saxon with 9.2% Parliament could move in.
