- Abuja / Nigeria : With the mediation of the African Union , the Sudanese government and the rebel groups Sudanese Liberation Army and Movement for Justice and Equality agree on a joint plan to protect refugees in the crisis region of Darfur . The humanitarian question is now closed; the next point is the question of security.
- Beslan / Russia : According to initial information, terrorists are taking 1,200 hostages , including more than 800 children, in a school in North Ossetia-Alania and threatening to blow up the school if Chechen fighters detained in Ingushetia are not released.
- Darfur / Sudan : The United Nations employees kidnapped on August 28 by fighters of the Sudanese Liberation Army , who came to the country as part of the World Food Program , and three kidnapped Red Crescent employees are released.
- Kathmandu / Nepal : After the killing of twelve Nepalese hostages in Iraq yesterday , serious unrest broke out in the Nepalese capital. a. a mosque is stormed. A total of up to 100 people are injured. The authorities are imposing a curfew in the afternoon .
- Paris / France : The judicial authorities inform the press that three escape tunnels under construction and supporting pillars have been discovered under the Santé prison in Paris. - New York / United States : The Security Council of the United Nations adopted the Resolution 1559 that the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Lebanon calls and the disarmament of armed units active in Lebanon. Specifically, the Syrian troops and Hezbollah are meant.
- Rostov / Russia : The journalist Anna Politkowskaja is admitted to a hospital. The Chechnya correspondent for the opposition daily Novaya Gazeta could be the victim of a poison attack because of her critical reporting on Chechnya and the hostage-taking of Beslan , according to initial considerations of her employer.
- Weimar / Germany : A fire severely damages the Duchess Anna Amalia Library of the Classic Foundation . The fire destroyed around 30,000 volumes and around 40,000 more volumes were damaged by extinguishing water.
Friday 3rd September 2004
- Beslan / Russia : Russian security forces storm the school, which has been in the hands of hostage-takers for several days and where around 1,200 people are stuck. The hostage-takers shoot at random from the school, including fleeing children, and set off several explosive devices. At least 331 people are killed and over 700 more are hospitalized after the liberation, including more than 250 children. Most of the hostage-takers are killed and some are arrested. According to official statements after the storm, this was not included in the operational plan and was probably triggered by the escape attempt by some hostage-takers.

- Florida / United States : Hurricane Frances claims two lives in Florida after two people were killed in the Bahamas in the past few days . The property damage is estimated at several billion US dollars .
- Saarbrücken / Germany : In the state elections in Saarland , the CDU is expanding its absolute majority of the mandates from the previous legislative period . The turnout of only 55.5% is low for a West German state . The Christian Democrats under Prime Minister Peter Müller received 47.5% of the vote, the SPD fell to 30.8% of the vote. Both the Greens with 5.6% and the FDP with 5.2% succeed in re-entering the state parliament. The NPD receives 4% of the votes cast and the PDS triples its share of the vote from 0.8% to 2.3%.

- New York / United States : The United Nations (UN) is examining new reports that between 3,000 and 4,000 people have been displaced again in the recent days in the Sudanese crisis region of Darfur . Since the Sudanese government is not determined enough against the Janjaweed - fighters impose happening, like the US and many European governments sanctions against the government.
- Villach / Austria : Two 100 euro banknotes obtained from an ATM , which triggered the “ counterfeit money alarm” at the weekend , are identified as real banknotes on closer inspection. According to Günter Willegger , Director of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank , the notes were apparently washed once in a washing machine and had lost some paint in the process.

- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Employment Agency's deficit in August was just under 4.8 billion euros . The total of the federal grant of 5.2 billion euros granted for 2004 was almost reached.
- Gaza City / Palestinian Territories : At least 14 Palestinians are killed in an Israeli rocket attack on a Hamas training center in Gaza City. The Israeli attack is a reaction to the double attack in Beersheba that killed 16 Israelis the week before.
- Moscow / Russia : President Vladimir Putin is against a public investigation into the hostage-taking of Beslan and announced an "internal investigation". Meanwhile, three journalists reporting on the hostage drama were arrested, among other things for lack of valid travel documents, and the editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Izvestia had to resign because of "too emotional and gaudy reporting" at the instigation of the authorities.

- Dresden / Germany : In the state elections in the Free State of Saxony , the CDU under Prime Minister Georg Milbradt loses two-digit numbers and cannot hold its absolute majority with only 41.1%. With slight increases to 23.6%, the PDS becomes the second strongest force, far ahead of the SPD , which achieved its worst post-war result in a state election with 9.8% and is just ahead of the right-wing radical NPD , which is in the Saxon with 9.2% Parliament could move in. After the assurance of the Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan that the Turkish criminal law reform will take place without the recently much discussed punishment of adultery , nothing stands in the way of starting accession talks , according to the EU commissioner for EU enlargement , Günter Verheugen . Even on a visit lasting several days, he was convinced that it was not justified to accuse Turkey of "systematic torture ".
- Washington, DC / USA . After a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ijad Allawi , US President Bush declared that he was expecting an "escalation of violence" before the elections in January 2005 because extremists and insurgents want to prevent them. Presidential candidate John Kerry criticizes Allawi, who before the US Congress describes the politics in his country as a "success" and thus contradicts earlier statements. US Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is considering excluding "strongholds of violence" in Iraq from the January 2005 elections.

- Rome / Italy . In order to avert impending bankruptcy , the Italian airline Alitalia will be split into two companies ( AZ Fly for flight operations and AZ Service for service business). Rationalization measures will fall victim to around 3700 employees.
- Vienna / Austria . The President of the Austrian Constitutional Court (VfgH), Karl Korinek , sees the obligation to set up bilingual place-name signs in the Carinthian Völkermarkt district . This is justified by a valid VfGH decision from 2001. At the end of 2001, the Constitutional Court repealed the unconstitutional " Ethnic Groups Act " and granted the government a one-year period to enact a constitutional regulation; however, this deadline passed unused.
