Petros VII
Petros (Papapetrou) VII (born September 3, 1949 in Sichari , Cyprus ; † September 11, 2004 ) was the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria with the official title of Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa .
Petros was elected by the Holy Synod on February 18, 1997 , and took office on March 9 of the same year. Before his election, Petros served as a deacon and priest . In 1983 he was ordained a bishop . He was in a close relationship with his predecessor Patriarch Parthenios III. and took over his office after his death in 1996.
Petros VII died along with 16 other people, including three bishops of the Alexandrian Church , when a helicopter that was supposed to take him on a visit to Mount Athos crashed over the Aegean Sea .
