Asghar Ali Engineer (born March 10, 1939 in Salumbar ; † May 14, 2013 in Mumbai ) was an Indian Islamic theologian and scholar who was famous for his view of Islam - especially that in India - and current issues. He was the leader of the Dawudi Bohras Progressive Movement, which broke away in the 1970s from the Dawudi Bohras community led by the 52nd Dā'ī al-Mutlaq Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin . His son is an Irfan Engineer .

Live and act

Asghar Ali Engineer is the author of many books and articles in international journals. He was the founding chairman of the Asian Muslim Action Network, the Institute of Islamic Studies, and the Center for the Study of Society and Secularism.

In March 2000 he was assassinated.

In 2004 he was one of the people who received the Right Livelihood Award ("Alternative Nobel Prize").

In 2009 he was listed on the list of 500 Most Influential Muslims by the Prince al-Walid-bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center of Jordan.
