- Berlin / Germany : The Bundestag resolves the labor market reform according to the so-called Hartz concept , which u. a. includes the introduction of unemployment benefit II (ALG 2). Those who are capable of work and in principle all those who are partially able to work without sufficient income or assets to secure their livelihood will receive ALG 2 for the entire period of their unemployment . The basic security of fully disabled people will usually be provided through social assistance . - Lisbon / Portugal : The game between Portugal and Greece ends the European Football Championship in Portugal. Greece defeated Portugal with a goal from Angelos Charisteas in the 57th minute and are European champions for the first time. All over Greece and in a number of large cities in Germany , the party continues until the early hours of the morning.
- London / United Kingdom : Defending champion Roger Federer from Switzerland wins the men's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships in tennis by beating Andy Roddick from the USA in four sets.
- New York / United States : At Ground Zero , the site where up to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 , the twin towers of the World Trade Center towered into the sky, is the cornerstone of a new skyscraper designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind set .

- Vienna / Austria : Federal President Thomas Klestil is admitted to the General Hospital of the City of Vienna as a result of a cardiac arrest . The official handover to his successor Heinz Fischer is to take place in three days , so that, in accordance with the Federal Constitution, Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel receives the Federal President's agenda on an interim basis .

- Berlin / Germany : The Ministry of Justice is planning a change in the law that will extend the so-called “ great eavesdropping ” to the previously protected professional group of doctors, lawyers, tax advisors, drug advisors and journalists. Furthermore, the large eavesdropping attack should only be allowed in the future for serious crimes with a minimum sentence of 5 years or more. The Federal Constitutional Court had called for a corresponding change. Michael Krapp and Hans Kaiser left the state government, Andreas Trautvetter and Karl Heinz Gasser received new departments, Dagmar Schipanski became the state parliament president .
- Glynn County / United States : The heads of state of the Group of Eight (G8) and two representatives of the European Union meet for the 30th World Economic Summit on Sea Island near Brunswick , Georgia .
- Houston / United States : The former CEO of Enron Kenneth Lay faces the federal agency FBI . He had been charged with falsifying accounts in connection with the collapse of the group . Lay was also known as the "shadow advisor" to President George W. Bush , on whose behalf he helped form the government.
- Vienna / Austria : The new Federal President Heinz Fischer ( SPÖ ) is sworn in.

- Baghdad , Samarra / Iraq : three US soldiers and one Iraqi die in an attack by insurgents in Samarra; 18 other men are injured. A car bomb kills an ex- Ba'ath official in Baghdad .

- Moscow / Russia : Paul Klebnikov , editor-in-chief of the Russian edition of Forbes Magazine and author of a book about Boris Berezovsky , which explained the machinations of Russia's oligarchs , is shot dead by two unknown perpetrators in Moscow.
- Vienna / Austria : The Austrian Federal President Thomas Klestil was solemnly buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery in the presence of over twenty presidents, kings and thousands of people.

- Bangkok / Thailand : The “15. international AIDS conference "opens. Thousands of experts have gathered to discuss the global fight against the immunodeficiency disease.
- Belgrade / Serbia and Montenegro : After winning the election as President of the Republic of Serbia on June 27, Boris Tadić , who comes from the region of Montenegro and is considered liberal, is sworn in by the Democratic Party as the new President of Serbia.
- Mediterranean region : After a three-week dispute, Italy has allowed the German rescue ship Cap Anamur with 37 Sudanese refugees on board to enter Italian waters. The refugees have asked for asylum in Germany.
- Washington, DC / United States : The Democratic US presidential candidate-designate John Kerry accuses incumbent George W. The Augsburg public prosecutor's office hopes that the arrest will provide new information in connection with the CDU donation affair and in the trial against the son of Franz Josef Strauss , Max Strauss .

- Gdansk , Warsaw / Poland : Horst Köhler is setting out on his first trip abroad as German President to Poland and France . The first visit to Poland is intended to highlight the special connection between Poland and Germany and the origins of Horst Köhler. The Israeli government then declared that it did not want to adhere to the UN majority decision and that it would continue building the barrier in the West Bank .

- Stuttgart / Germany . The Baden-Württemberg Justice Minister Corinna Werwigk-Hertneck resigns after the public prosecutor's office has started investigations against her. Werwigk-Hertneck had informed her party colleague Walter Döring of ongoing investigations against him and thus acted illegally.
- Strasbourg / France . The European Parliament has confirmed the former Portuguese Prime Minister José Manuel Barroso as the new EU Commission President with a clear majority . Barroso received 413 of the 723 votes in the secret ballot, 251 MPs voted against him, 44 abstained. He now has to form a 25-person commission, which must be confirmed again by the EU Parliament and the EU governments before taking office on November 1, 2004.
- Turkey . In a train accident near the Anatolian city of Sakarya , 150 km east of Istanbul , around 36 people were killed and 79 people injured. Four wagons rolled over in the open. There were 230 passengers on board. The high-speed train only went into operation in June. It should shorten the travel time on the almost 600 kilometers long route to just five hours. Experts warned that the route had not yet been developed for this.

- Mostar / Bosnia-Herzegovina : In Mostar, the historic " Old Bridge " ( Bosnian Stari Most ) was re- inaugurated under strong security precautions . The stone arch bridge, built in the 16th century during the Ottoman Empire , was destroyed by Croatian shells in 1993 during the Bosnian War . - Hockenheimring / Germany . Michael Schumacher won the German Grand Prix for the eleventh time in the twelfth race during the 2004 Formula 1 season and is therefore not far from his seventh world title.

- Schleswig / Germany . The city of Schleswig celebrates its 1200th anniversary. - Karlsruhe / Germany . The federal government was not allowed to introduce the junior professorship alone. The Federal Constitutional Court decides the 5th Amendment Act for Higher Education Act was "because it exceeded the framework legislation of the covenant with Article 70, Article 75 in conjunction with Article 72, paragraph 2 of the Constitution inconsistent and void." - New York / United States , Berlin / Germany . The US and Germany are increasing diplomatic pressure on the Sudanese government in Khartoum to tackle the ongoing human rights violations in the Darfur region . The United States submitted a draft UN resolution to the UN Security Council threatening sanctions after a 30-day period . The German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer increased the sanctions threats: "If Khartoum does not end the killing in Darfur and the planned resolution of the UN Security Council does not implement satisfactorily, the international community will draw the consequences."

- Kabul / Afghanistan . The aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is ceasing its activities in Afghanistan after 24 years. MSF accuses the coalition under US leadership of endangering aid workers through the instrumentalization and abuse of humanitarian aid . So were z. For example, Afghans have been asked by leaflets to provide information about the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in order to continue receiving humanitarian aid. As recently as June , five MSF employees were killed in an ambush in Afghanistan.
- Bakuba / Iraq . In the market square of Bakuba, a small town 65 km north of Baghdad , at least 68 people are killed and at least 30 more injured in a suicide bombing. The assassin blew up his vehicle in front of a police station, in front of which around 250 job seekers were lined up to be recruited into the police service. This attack, which resulted in only civilian casualties, is the bloodiest since the formal handover of power to the interim government on June 28th .

- Ghislenghien / Belgium : A devastating gas explosion in Ghislenghien, Belgium, 30 km south-east of Brussels , caused damage in a wide area and cost the lives of at least 15 people. According to official information, 200 people were injured, 30 of them seriously. The explosion occurred after construction workers accidentally leaked a gas pipeline. Huge orange-red flames rose over the scene of the accident and scorched vehicles that were several hundred meters away. Two nearby factories also caught fire.
- New York / United States : The Security Council of the United Nations requested in its resolution 1556 by the Sudanese government to end violence in the troubled region of Darfur . The resolution passed with 13 out of 15 votes threatens to have unspecified consequences after a 30-day period. According to estimates by the US Agency for International Development, up to 80,000 people have already died in the crisis region.

- Paris / France : France relocates 200 soldiers stationed in Chad to the Sudanese border in order to be able to provide humanitarian aid to refugees from the crisis region of Darfur . In addition, transport aircraft are to be made available for the delivery of relief supplies.
