- Bell County / United States : The trial of the soldier Lynndie England at Fort Hood military base has surprisingly broken off. England's confession of involvement in ill-treatment in Abu Ghuraib prison near Baghdad , Iraq , was rejected by the court.
- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Cabinet resolves to repeal around 350 laws and ordinances that are no longer of practical importance today. Some of the provisions date from the time of the German Empire and the time of National Socialism .
- Mardan / Pakistan : Al-Qaeda member Abu Faraj al-Liby is arrested after an exchange of fire . He is considered number three on the terrorist network, but confusion with another person cannot be ruled out.

- Aachen / Germany : The Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is awarded the International Charlemagne Prize for his services to Europe .
- Cologne / Germany : The federal chairman of the FDP , Guido Westerwelle , is confirmed in office at the federal party congress with 80.1% of the votes, so he achieved roughly the same result as two years ago. Rainer Brüderle is re-elected as the first deputy federal chairman with 81.0% of the vote. This result is significantly worse than two years ago. The results of the two other deputy federal chairmen Andreas Pinkwart (76.6%) and Cornelia Pieper (60.5%) were even worse . In contrast, Hermann Otto Solms as treasurer received 90.6% of the votes. Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (76.4%) and Birgit Homburger (77.3%) were re-elected as assessors in the Presidium . The Lower Saxony state parliamentary group chairman, Philipp Rösler , who achieved the best result of all candidates with 95.0% , moved into the presidium . At the suggestion of Westerwelle, the party congress elected Dirk Niebel as the new general secretary with 92.4% of the vote.
- London / United Kingdom : Despite the loss of 47 seats in the lower house of Parliament , Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Party (LP) retained its absolute majority since 1997 after the election . This is the first time that the LP has secured a parliamentary majority in three consecutive elections.
- New York / United States : At around 7:35 GMT exploded in front of the Consulate of the United Kingdom in the Third Avenue a bomb. Some windows are broken, but no casualties are reported.
- Rottach-Egern / Germany : The 53rd Bilderberg Conference will take place from May 5th to 8th, 2005 . The conference is taking place in Germany for the fifth time. Functional elites from international politics, transnational corporations, the nobility as well as media representatives and personalities from international organizations are expected at the conference location in the Seehotel Überfahrt am Tegernsee .
- Vienna / Austria : When Amadeus Awards is Stefan Weber ( Drahdiwaberl ) honored for his life's work.

- Dresden / Germany : In riots with up to 1,000 people involved, several people were injured in the night from Thursday to Friday. In clashes between drunk rioters and the police, 70 people were injured, 40 of them officials. The rioters had gathered on the banks of the Elbe for Father's Day, throwing stones and bottles and setting off fireworks.
- Freiburg / Germany : In the course of the student protests, the rectorate of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg was occupied by students on Monday morning . The action lasts for several days.

- Beirut / Lebanon : After 15 years of exile in France , the former Prime Minister of the country Michel Aoun is returning to his home country. He led for years the command of Freischar Lebanese forces against the armed forces of Syria , whose presence in Lebanon from 1976 lasted until April of this year. - Leonberg / Germany : prisoners get their names back symbolically. The concentration camp memorial initiative will unveil a memorial in the form of a nameplate in front of the old Engelberg tunnel.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The CEO of Deutsche Börse , Werner Seifert , announces his resignation, and the chairman of the supervisory board, Rolf-E. Breuer resign at the end of the year.
- Moscow / Russia : The 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe is commemorated with a military parade on Red Square , around 50 heads of state and government take part in the commemoration ceremony. For the first time, a German Chancellor is among the guests.

- Berlin / Germany : The memorial for the murdered Jews of Europe is inaugurated in the German capital .
- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily announces a "National Plan for the Protection of Information Infrastructures in Germany". This is being developed together with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The aim is to develop “new strategies for combating attacks by hackers and viruses”.
- Edirne / Turkey : At the International Roma Conference, the problems of the approx. 15 million Roma in Europe were discussed, especially their position in Turkey.

- Berlin / Germany : The German Bundestag has approved the draft EU constitution with an overwhelming majority . 569 MPs voted for the draft constitution, 23 against and 2 abstained. On May 27, the Federal Council also approves the draft constitution.
- Berlin / Germany : According to official reports, public budgets are threatened with tax losses of 66.8 billion euros by the end of 2008.
- Strasbourg / France : The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has declared the trial of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to be "unfair".

- Bayonne / United States : The Freedom of the Seas cruise ship is ceremonially christened in Cape Liberty.
- Turkey : Due to a dispute about the withdrawal of the flight permit for the Turkish company Onur Air by the aviation authorities in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, around 10,000 holidaymakers are left sitting at Turkish airports without the booked return trip.
- Uzbekistan : When the city administration and a prison are stormed in the east of the country in the Fergana Valley on the outskirts of Kyrgyzstan , insurgents free around 1,000 prisoners. New sports are u. a. Weightlifting and cricket . The games last until May 21st .
- Tórshavn / Faroe Islands : In the third and final reading, the Faroese Løgting is negotiating the controversial takeover law , which regulates, among other things, the future foreign policy of the island nation belonging to Denmark . A motion of no confidence tabled by the republican Tjóðveldisflokkurin against the Social Democratic Prime Minister Jóannes Eidesgaard fails.
- Taipei / Taiwan : The last election to the National Assembly will take place in Taiwan .

- Abidjan / Ivory Coast : Government and rebels agree on an agreement that provides for the disarmament or the merging of military forces into a common army in the country.
- Andijon / Uzbekistan : The Uzbek government cordoned off the city due to violent unrest.
- Rio de Janeiro / Brazil : The Beach Soccer World Cup , which has been held since 1995, is being held as an official FIFA tournament for the first time . First place at Copacabana went to France , who beat Portugal 1-0 in the final on penalties .

- Tashkent / Uzbekistan : The unrest in Uzbekistan continues. In the city of Pachtaabad , 200 people are said to have been killed by government forces. Several regions of the country are cordoned off from army and police forces.

After 39 years in the SPD and 10 years in the red-green government, they are now about to switch to the opposition . The CDU will form the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia in coalition with the FDP .
- Düsseldorf / Germany : As a result of the heavy defeat in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the SPD chairman Franz Müntefering and Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder announced that they would aim for new federal elections next autumn . This is to be initialized by a vote of confidence and dissolution of the Bundestag by the Federal President , as it was done in a similar way - but for different reasons - in 1982 .
