Arafura Games
The Arafura Games were athletic competitions, the 1991-2011 biennial in Darwin ( Australia were held). As with the Olympic Games , there were competitions in various sports . It was initially aimed at the Asia - Pacific region, which later changed in some sports ( boxing is one of those sports in which only boxers from the Asia-Pacific region participated).
At the Arafura Games 2001 3,100 participated athletes from 25 nations participate. In 2003 the games were canceled due to the SARS virus . The 8th Games took place from May 12th to 19th, 2007 and for the second time also included competitions for the disabled , based on the Paralympics .
The 9th Games took place from May 9th to 16th, 2009. The 10th games took place from May 6th to 14th, 2011 . The 11th, from 11 to 18 May 2013 to be held in Darwin had been canceled because the new prime minister of Territory Northern Territory (NT) Adam Giles looked at this sporting event to be too expensive. The following year, 2014, the NT announced that the Arafura Games would no longer take place for this reason.
The name Arafura Games comes from the Arafura Sea , which lies between Australia and Southeast Asia . It forms the center of the original catchment area.
