Zouhair Yahyaoui ( Arabic زهير اليحياوي Zuhair Yahyāwī ; * December 8, 1967 ; † March 13, 2005 ) was a Tunisian dissident .

Life

Zouhair Yahyaoui studied business administration . As Reporter Without Borders , Yahyaoui fought for freedom of expression on the Internet . After criticizing Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali on the TUNeZINE.com website, he was arrested on June 4, 2002 and was imprisoned for 18 months. Since July 2001, texts by the opposition and satires that deal critically with the president have been published on TUNeZINE.com. During his detention, he complained several times about poor detention conditions.

He was awarded the Cyber ​​Freedom Prize for his work .

Yahyaoui died on March 13, 2005 at the age of 37 from heart disease.

One year after the revolution in Tunisia in 2010/2011 , the first national day of Internet freedom was celebrated in honor of Yahyaoui. The Tunisian interim president Moncef Marzouki paid tribute to the dissident's work during a ceremony on March 13, 2012.
