Supachai Panitchpakdi ( Thai ศุภ ชัย พา นิ ช ภั ก ดิ์ , RTGS : Supphachai Phanitchaphak; born May 30, 1946 in Bangkok ) is a Thai economist and politician ( Democratic Party ). From 2002 to 2005 he was Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). From 2005 to 2013 he was Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Life

education

Supachai received his education at St. Gabriel's College and Triam Udom School in Bangkok. He then studied at the Netherlands School of Economics , today's Erasmus University Rotterdam , econometrics with focus on development planning. He graduated with a master's degree. In 1973 he received his doctorate in the field of personnel planning and development. His doctoral supervisor was the Nobel Prize winner Jan Tinbergen .

Career

In 1974 he started working for the Bank of Thailand , the Thai central bank. He worked in the research department, in the international finance division and in the banking supervision division. In 1986 he was elected to parliament as a member of the Democratic Party. Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda appointed him Deputy Minister of Finance. In 1988 he left politics temporarily and became a member of the board of directors and later president of the Thai Military Bank .

In 1992 he returned to politics, was appointed senator and deputy prime minister in the Chuan Leekpais government . His field of activity was economic and trade policy. In this position he represented Thailand at the signing of the Marrakesh Agreement of the Uruguay Round , which the WTO established. He was also involved in deepening Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), ASEAN and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). 1995 to 1997 his party was in the opposition. In the second government of Chuan Leekpais, he was again deputy prime minister and trade minister.

After another change of government in 2001, he became visiting professor at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne . During this time he wrote several books on globalization and world trade. As Mike Moore's successor , he became Director General of the WTO in 2002. In 2005 Pascal Lamy replaced him . Since September 1, 2005, he has held the office of Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development ( UNCTAD ). After the military coup in Thailand in September 2006, he was under discussion as a possible head of a civil transitional government. However, he stayed with UNCTAD. In 2012, ASEAN recognized Supachai with the first grand prize of the Asia Cosmopolitan Awards . On September 1, 2013, he was replaced as UNCTAD Secretary General by Mukhisa Kituyi from Kenya.

Private

Supachai is married and has a son and a daughter.
