Mardan is a city in the Mardan District in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 360,000 inhabitants. It is near the border with Afghanistan.

Industrial settlements are sugar processing , weaving mills and sawmills .

There is a military base in the city . It is a training center for the armed forces of Pakistan .

On February 10, 2011, a suicide attack on the military base took place in Mardan . The assassin was a youth in school uniform. 27 soldiers were killed and 35 injured. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and cited revenge for US threats as a motive .
