Presidential election in Croatia 2005

In the presidential election of Croatia in 2005 , the incumbent Stjepan Mesić was re-elected head of state.

Election process

On January 2, 2005, the first round of presidential elections in Croatia took place. Mesić was only one percentage point short of the half of the votes required for an election victory. Jadranka Kosor was in second place with 20 percent of the vote.

On January 16, 2005, the Croatians voted in the runoff between incumbent Stjepan Mesić and his rival, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.

In the presidential election, the incumbent Stjepan Mesić clearly won the election. On the basis of voter surveys, the state television reported that Mesić received 70.75 percent and Jadranka Kosor received 29.25 percent of the vote.

Mesić's plans

After his re-election, Mesić said that the aim of his term in office was to make Croatia a member of the European Union . The prerequisite for accession negotiations is that Croatian General Ante Gotovina , who has been indicted before the war crimes tribunal in The Hague , is arrested and extradited.
