Hagen Rether in Starnberg (2016) with his love five program

Before going on tour with his own program, Rether worked as a pianist in Ludger Stratmann 's program from 1996 to 2005 .

With his solo program “Liebe”, which he constantly updates and varies, he has been offering sharp-tongued, primarily political cabaret since 2003. Although his program also deals with daily political issues, he focuses more on socio-political issues such as religion , mass media , capitalism , consumerism and globalization .

Important areas for his thematic debates include the Catholic Church , its scandals and the institution of the papacy as well as the complex political entanglements of the great powers, especially that of the USA . However, he also questions the appropriation of representatives of supposedly left-wing politics by the power of capital ("model left") and other contradictions in social life. The parody (for example by Jürgen Rüttgers and Herbert Grönemeyer ) also plays a role in his work. People of contemporary history and current political events are targeted as objects of his satires , factory farming , meat and milk consumption are heavily criticized by the avowed vegan . In addition, in recent years he has addressed the growing hostility to Islam that he has observed in German society, in politics and in the media.

A distinctive part of his performances is a black concert grand piano, which he cleans as "bored" as meticulously during his stage appearances, usually in parallel with his lecture, and then uses it for musical interludes as well as to accompany his linguistic performance - or leaves it completely unplayed. He usually does not sit on a piano stool, but on an office chair with armrests. As props for his performances, in addition to the obligatory glass of water with a water bottle, a cleaning rag and a spray bottle with cleaning agent, often a baseball bat and a few bananas, of which he consumes one or more from time to time, during his performances.

Hagen Rether is a regular guest in cabaret shows like the Mitternachtsspitzen ( WDR ), News of the institution ( ZDF ) and the satire summit ( First ).
