Padang is a port city in Indonesia on the west coast of Sumatra with about 927,000 inhabitants (2018) and capital of the province of West Sumatra .
Cityscape
The city area is 626.63 km². Large parts of the population belong to the Minangkabau , who speak the Minangkabau language and are Muslims , and there is a Chinese- speaking minority in the south of the city , the majority of whom are Christians .
Padang has a new international airport ( Minangkabau International Airport ), a port that is six kilometers south, and links to the Padang – Sawahlunto railway line . The city is the trading center for the coastal plain and the mountainous hinterland. Important commodities today are cement , cinnamon , black coal , coffee , nutmegs , rattan , rubber , copra , tea and textiles . The place is of tourist importance for surf tourists as a starting point for trips to the Mentawai Islands . The island of Cubadak is also located near Padang .
From 16./17. In the 19th century, pepper was grown in the Padang area. In 1663/1680 the Dutch founded a trading post in Padang. From 1781 to 1784 and from 1795 to 1819 during the Coalition Wars , the city was British , then Dutch again. Around 1780 gold was the most important commodity. During World War II , Padang was occupied by Japanese troops.
Padang was badly shaken by the Sumatra earthquake on September 30, 2009 . The earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.6 M w on the moment magnitude scale . The hypocenter of the quake was about 50 kilometers northwest of the city at a depth of 81 km, an aftershock was still 5.5. Serious damage has been done in Padang and the surrounding area; the number of victims on October 2 was given as around 1,100.
The city has several colleges including Universitas Bung Hatta , Universitas Negri Padang (UNP) and a university founded in 1956, Universitas Andalas , as well as an agricultural research institute. Padang has been the seat of a Catholic archbishop ( Diocese of Padang ) since 1961 .
The Padang cuisine , which is widespread throughout Indonesia, is famous .
The Marine Protected Area (MPA) Pulau Pieh , Indonesian Taman Wisata Perairan (TWP) Pulau Pieh , has existed west of Padang since 2000, which comprises several coral islands (Bando, Pieh, Pandan, Toran, Air) and about 40,000 hectares. It is the only protected area in Indonesia in the Indian Ocean.
