The University of Andalas ( Indonesian : Universitas Andalas , short: Unand ) is a university of the Republic of Indonesia . The UNAND one of Padang , the capital of the Indonesian province of West Sumatra on the archipelago island of Sumatra . The university is called Andalas, the previous name for Sumatra.

history

The university was founded in 1955. It was opened on September 13, 1956 by its two founding fathers, Vice President Mohammad Hatta and the Minister for Culture and Education. Initially, the Unand was divided into five faculties : for agriculture, teaching, medicine, mathematics and natural sciences, as well as, as the only relatively local, the law faculty in Padang itself. All the others were widely scattered in different settlements. In 1961 the economic area was established in the provincial capital. Two years later, also in Padang, the Faculty of Livestock. The teaching faculty was spun off under the name IKIP in 1965 and renamed Universitas Negeri Padang in 1997 (in German: Padang State University).

The teaching used to be strongly influenced by Dutch, hence the Dutch titles of lecturers such as Drs. Or Dra. More recent influences in teaching are predominantly American or Australian in character.

location

The campus is in a rural area on the Bukit Karamuntiang hill , which is 100 m above sea level . Because of this, it is one of the places of refuge from anticipated floods caused by earthquakes, as happened in December 2004 in Aceh province by a tsunami . When the weather is clear, the sea can be seen from the highest point . The university complex is located in the Limau Manis district and extends over an area of 500 hectares. The distance to Padang is about 12 km.

The majority of the faculties are represented centrally on campus. Exceptions to this are the medical faculty and the polytechnic (technical college) for agriculture.

architecture

All buildings are reminiscent of large, gray, angular or pointed-edged concrete blocks. Pointed-edged roofs are modeled on the traditional Minangkabau architecture. Only the gate entrance resembles traditional architecture.

The faculties of Unand are divided into nine areas:

degrees

Technical college degrees in agriculture or engineering as well as bachelor , master and doctoral degrees in the existing departments are possible .
