Johann von Hermann (born November 17, 1800 in Naketendörflas , Bohemia ; since 1867 Knight von Hermann ; † July 17, 1890 in Vienna ) was an Austrian educator.

Life

Johann Hermann studied philosophy and law at the Charles University in Prague and the University of Vienna . After completing his studies, he became a private teacher in Vienna. In 1839 Hermann opened his own school there.

Hermann developed new teaching methods and in 1835 he invented the type case as a teaching aid for learning the mother tongue as well as foreign languages. In addition, since 1835, Hermann published writings on his design of reading lessons and, after his appointment in a managerial position, further educational publications, including on teaching arithmetic and gymnastics.

In 1850 Hermann gave up his private school and switched to civil service. As part of the reform of the Austrian education system, the newly appointed Minister of Education, Leo Graf von Thun-Hohenstein, appointed him inspector of elementary schools in Styria . After leaving office, Hermann reopened a private school in Vienna in 1854 and a public secondary school for boys in 1859, which he directed from 1886 until his death.

In 1863 he became a member of the Education Council convened by State Minister Anton von Schmerling , of which he was a member until 1867.
