The Minangkabau International Airport ( Indonesian Bandara Internasional Minangkabau , IATA : PDG , ICAO : WIPT ) is the airport of Padang , the provincial capital of West Sumatra . It started operations on July 22, 2005 and replaced the Padang-Tabing Airport , which is close to the city . The airport was named after the local Minangkabau ethnic group . In addition, the architecture of the passenger building is based on the style of the Minangkabau houses.

The only runway runs in a north-south direction and about 500 m parallel to the coast. The main apron , a one-kilometer taxiway and the handling building are located east of the runway.

Passengers on both national and international flights are handled separately in the single terminal building. The building has 17 check-in counters and five baggage claim belts . Passengers can board the aircraft via two passenger boarding bridges .

Six to seven aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737 or four the size of an Airbus A330 can be parked on the 40,000 m² apron . A hangar is located at the southern end of the taxiway.

In 2016, the 3-kilometer-long railway connection from the airport to Duku on the Padang – Pariaman railway was put into operation.

Planning

Plan of the airport area

There are plans to increase the length of the single runway to three kilometers so that aircraft the size of a Boeing 747 can also fly to the airport.
