Jawed Karim (born January 1, 1979 in Merseburg ) is a German-American Internet entrepreneur and computer scientist . Karim is one of the three co-founders of the popular video portal YouTube . Many of the core components of PayPal , including the real-time anti-fraud system, were also designed and implemented by Karim.

Life

Karim's mother, Christine Karim, comes from Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt and is now an assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Minnesota . His father Naimul Karim comes from Bangladesh and came to the GDR as a student on a scholarship , where he studied chemistry at the Technical University of Merseburg . Due to increasing harassment from the authorities, the family left for the west of Neuss in 1982 , where Karim's father worked as a chemist for the technology group 3M and Karim attended the Catholic Norbert grammar school at Knechtsteden monastery in the city of Dormagen .

The xenophobic mood at the time of the xenophobic attacks in Mölln , Rostock and Hoyerswerda in the early 1990s put a strain on the family. After Karim's father received an offer to work at 3M's US headquarters, the family moved to the United States in 1992 . There he attended high school in St. Paul in the US state of Minnesota . After graduating, he began studying at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , which he interrupted after three years to take a position at the online payment service provider PayPal, based in San José, California . He continued to attend his courses and lectures and was able to complete his computer science studies with a bachelor's degree in 2004 .

He met Chad Hurley and Steve Chen while at PayPal . The three work colleagues later founded the video platform YouTube together , where Karim uploaded the first YouTube video Me at the zoo on April 23, 2005 at 8:27 pm . Karim left YouTube during the growth phase, but remained one of the largest shareholders in the company. Karim then studied computer science ( computer science ) at the Stanford University with the goal of becoming self Professor later.

YouTube was bought by Google in 2006 . In return, Karim received Google shares worth $ 64 million at the time.

In 2008 Karim founded “Y Ventures”, a company that financially supports students and helps them set up their own startup . The company was one of the early investors in Airbnb .
