Steve Chen ( Chinese  陳士駿  /  陈士骏 , Pinyin Chén Shìjùn ; born Steven Shih Chen in Taipei on August 18, 1978 ) is a Taiwanese co-founder and was the chief technology officer of the YouTube website .

life and career

He grew up in Taiwan until he was 8 years old when his family immigrated to the United States . There he attended the John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights ( Illinois ) and finally the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in the US state of Illinois. After graduation, he began studying at the University of Illinois .

Steve Chen was an early employee of the US company PayPal , where he met Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, and with whom he set up the PayPal online payment system. The three founded the YouTube website in 2005. Karim left YouTube during the growth phase, but is said to have been one of the largest shareholders in the company alongside Chen and Hurley.

In August 2013, Steve Chen and Youtube co-founder Chad Hurley announced that they would start another joint project: Mixbit video app . According to their own statements, Chen and Hurley want to stir up the market with their mobile app and compete with online services such as Vine or Instagram .

family

Chen has been married to Jamie Park, a product marketing manager at Google Korea - now Jamie Chen - née Park, Ji-hyun - 박지 휸 ( 朴智賢 ), since 2009 . In 2010, Chen's wife, Jamie, gave birth to a son. The family now lives in San Francisco with their two children and is one of the big supporters of the local Asian Art Museum .

Awards

In 2007, YouTube founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley were recognized by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences as "People of the Year" at the 11th Webby Awards .
