Vine (case word from: Video network) was a video portal for exchanging very short film recordings. Registered users could upload 6-second long video clips to the portal and “share” them with others - in the sense of a social network . The online service was taken over by Twitter Inc. in autumn 2012 . Free apps were available for Android , iOS , Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 .

On October 27, 2016, Twitter and Vine announced that they would discontinue the service and video app Vine for this in the coming months. The users were informed of this in advance, however. The final closure of Vines took place on January 17, 2017. Since then, no new videos can be added to the network, only old ones can be downloaded .

concept

Vine recorded and published videos up to six seconds in length. The user had the option of filming in two ways with his smartphone or tablet computer : continuously or with intermediate stops. It is precisely because of the latter that many Vine films are reminiscent of animated GIFs , a technique that was popular in the 1990s, but then without sound. When the video is over, it starts all over again ( loop ). In terms of aesthetics, many clips are based on the idea of the stop trick . One of the reasons Twitter was interested in Vine was that it went with the short text messages.

As with other “sharing” platforms, users had to create their own profile in order to upload videos. The recipient who saw the video was able to express his favor by tapping the I like button , here in the form of a smiley . There is also the follower system and hashtags like on Twitter.

Updates

There have been several updates since Vine was released to meet user demand for more features. At the end of March 2013 it was made possible to publish vines on websites such as B. own blogs to embed.

At the end of April 2013, Vine introduced the option of taking pictures with the front camera. Since then, it's been easier to make videos of yourself. The biggest update so far took place at the beginning of July 2013. It included the introduction of the Revine function, with which vines could be shared by other users within the community. This is a typical component of social networks that is also available on Twitter in the form of retweets . This update also included the option to set an account to "private" and thus only make the clips accessible to his followers. In addition, 15 channels have been introduced with topics on which users can post their clips.

development

Vine was founded in June 2012 by Dominik Hofmann and Rus Jussupow. In July 2012, Colin Kroll joined the company as CTO . In October 2012, Vine was acquired by Twitter Inc. for approximately $ 30 million. Its CEO Dick Costolo called it "The next big thing". On January 24, 2013, Vine was released on the App Store for iOS . On June 3, 2013, the version for Android followed in Google Play .

In early April 2013, Vine ranked number one for free apps on the App Store in the US . In early June 2013, just before its release for Android, Vine had 13 million users. The number of users rose to 40 million by the end of August.

Since November 12, 2013, Vine has also been available free of charge for Microsoft Windows Phone 8 .

criticism

The long loading times for the videos were often criticized. Twitter Inc. tried to fix this deficiency with updates.

Not long after the release, the first pornographic videos were uploaded. This contradicted the guidelines of the iOS app store . Immediately after the videos appeared, Twitter Inc. changed the minimum age for using the video portal from 12 to 17 years.

Vine and Instagram

From the beginning, comparisons were to photo sharing Service Instagram established that the Facebook Inc. belongs. The power struggle between the two Internet companies Facebook and Twitter has been reflected in the development of the two applications since the publication of Vine.

Just a few hours after Vine was on the market, Facebook decided to prohibit users of this app from looking for Facebook friends. Twitter did the same thing in July 2012, when Instagram users were no longer allowed to search for their Twitter contacts.

Vine became increasingly popular during the first half of 2013. In early June, more Vine videos were posted than Instagram photos on Twitter , and Vine user numbers grew faster than Instagram in the months after it was published.

In late June 2013, Facebook introduced videos on Instagram that are similar to the Vine movies and that were picked up in the media as Facebook's response to Vine. The Instagram videos differ in length of a maximum of 15 seconds, the filter function and the fact that the videos do not run in an endless loop. The basic idea that the recording can be paused and the user can continue filming later is the same. Vine was then predicted to have trouble as the short video monopoly was broken. In fact, in the weeks following the introduction of Instagram videos, Vine usage declined.
