Dom Fernando Jóse Fernandes Costa Mascarenhas , 11th Marquês de Fronteira ; 9. Marquês de Alorna; 12. Conde de Torre; 13. Conde de Assumar; 12. Conde de Coculim (born April 17, 1945 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † November 12, 2014 ibid), was one of the highest Portuguese nobles. He was head of the Mascarenhas - Dynasty and the 11th Marquês de Fronteira, a dynasty that was once known for their loyalty to the King. Dom Fernando himself was considered an important advocate and fighter for democracy in Portugal. He was also active as a writer.

The 11th Marquês was born in 1945 to Dom Fernando de Mascaranhas (1910-1956) and Dona Maria Margarida da Canavarro Fernandes Costa. From 1967 to 1984 Dom Fernando was married to Dona Isabel Cristina Cardigas dos Reis for the first time, followed by the second marriage to Mafalda Osorio Miquelino from 1984 until the divorce in 2002.

Dom Fernando studied philosophy in Lisbon, Coimbra and Nanterre . From 1979 to 1988 he worked at the University of Évora . His main activities were limited to the administration of the castle and representative duties. During the time of the Portuguese dictatorship , the cultivated and heavyweight marquis made his house available to democratic oppositionists for meetings. Even after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he repeatedly appeared publicly as an advocate for democracy in Portugal.

In 1989 founded the Dom Fernando Foundation Fundação Casa de Fronteira e Alorna . It is intended to promote cultural, scientific and educational studies and encounters. As chairman of the foundation, Dom Fernando regularly led initiatives linked to literature, art and music, both in his seventeenth-century castle, the Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira in São Domingos de Benfica , and in the premises of Ponte de Sor and Herdade da Torre in the Portalegre district . In the fifth part “Castles in Estremadura , Portugal” of the documentary series “European Castles” , the Marquis and the Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira were presented.

Dom Fernando died after a long illness on November 12, 2014 at the age of 69 in Lisbon. He was laid out in the Sala das Batalhas (Hall of Battles) in the Palacio dos Marqueses de Fronteira and buried in the Cemeterio de Benfica ( Benfica Cemetery). With his death, the last descendant of the main branch of the Mascarenhas dynasty also died, as the marquis remained childless. He chose a relative from a branch of the Mascarenhas as his successor.
