Marcus Ajamada Stephen (born October 1, 1969 in Anetan ) is a former Nauruan weightlifter and politician. From December 19, 2007 to November 10, 2011 he was the incumbent President and Head of State of the Republic of Nauru . Since 2019 he has been a member of the Nauruan parliament , to which he was a member from 2003 to 2016.

Life

Athletic career

He first played Australian football for the local Aces team , but then decided to do weightlifting. In 1989 the Nauru Weightlifting Federation (NWF) was founded to allow Stephen, the then only professional weightlifter, to compete in international competitions.

Between 1988 and 2000 he won the Oceania Weightlifting Championships 10 times and is thus, together with Yukio Peter , the record holder for winning this competition.

In 1992 he first took part in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . Since there was no Olympic Committee in Nauru at that time, he successfully applied for Samoan citizenship and was allowed to start for Samoa. In 1993 the committee was founded and Stephen could run for Nauru in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000 .

During the Olympic torch relay to Sydney, Stephen was allowed to carry the torch at their stop in Nauru.

At the Commonwealth Games , however, he achieved his greatest successes: in 1990 he surprisingly won the gold medal in the snatch in the category up to 60 kg. In 1994 in the category up to 59 kg and in 1998 in the category up to 62 kg he won three golds each. When he last participated in Manchester in 2002 , he won the silver medal three times in the category up to 62 kg.

He celebrated his greatest success in 1999 at the World Championships in Athens when he was runner-up in pushing in the category up to 62 kg.

Political career

Since 1997 he has been the financial officer of the Nauruan Olympic Committee. On May 3, 2003 Stephen was elected to the Nauruan Parliament with 215 votes for the constituency of Anetan in the general election. During the last presidency of René Harris from August 8, 2003 to June 22, 2004, Stephen was Minister of Education and Finance of Nauru, but had to resign when Ludwig Scotty became the new president. In October 2004 he was re-elected to parliament.

After Nauru joined the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on June 15, 2005, Stephen was appointed the IWC's Nauru envoy. He represented Nauru at the IWC Congress in June 2005 in Ulsan, South Korea . In August 2007 he was re-elected to parliament and was nominated as a presidential candidate by the shrunken opposition, but was clearly defeated by Scotty in the fight vote in parliament with 3 to 14 votes. On December 19, 2007, Stephen surprisingly won a vote of no confidence with 10 to 7 votes against Scotty and was sworn in as the new President and Head of State. His cabinet consists of Foreign and Transport Minister Kieren Keke , Finance and Economics Minister Frederick Pitcher , Trade and Industry Minister Fabian Ribauw , Justice and Education Minister Roland Kun and Health and Sports Minister Matthew Batsiua . Stephen himself also takes on the Department of Home Affairs, Public Services and Phosphate Profits Administration . Stephen resigned on November 10, 2011, and Frederick Pitcher was elected as his successor.

In the parliamentary elections on July 9, 2016, he only received the third highest number of votes in his constituency of Anetan and was therefore not re-elected. In the 2019 parliamentary election , on the other hand, it achieved the second highest value in the vote count and thus got back into parliament.
