Lagumot Harris

Lagumot Gagiemem Nimidere Harris (born December 28, 1938 in Nauru - † September 8, 1999 in Melbourne ) was a Nauruan politician and former President of the Republic of Nauru from April 19, 1978 to May 15, 1978 and from November 21, 1995 to 11. November 1996. He was married and the father of ten children.

Harris worked first as pastor of the Nauruan CDF ( Nauru Congregational Church ). However, he turned away from this and founded the Independent Church in Boe in 1976 , which initially won many followers. In 1978 he became the parliament elected President.

Unlike other Nauruan politicians, Harris was a largely respected person with no intrigues or affairs. When Air Nauru was " banned from flying" in Australia in November 1996, when the airline's chairman was dismissed for poor performance, Harris had to hand over the presidency to Bernard Dowiyogo after a vote of no confidence . Dowiyogo then installed the Australian Ken McDonald as the new chairman of Air Nauru. Harris previously visited Manila on his state visit . At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation .
