House Mallinckrodt is a former manor and today's manor on the western slope of the Ardey Mountains . It is located in a forest above the Ruhr valley in the district of Ende (Gedern) in the Westphalian city of Herdecke and is often referred to as Mallinckrodt Castle due to its imposing construction .

history

Around 1241 the castle complex was still called "Mesekenwerke", its owners later called themselves von Mallinckrodt . It was a fiefdom of the Counts of Volmarstein , then the Counts of the Mark . After the owner family Mallinckrodt died out - later bearers of the name come from a side line not connected to this property - House Mallinckrodt went to the von der Recke von Volmerstein family , a branch of the Westphalian noble family von der Recke .

Around 1446 the castle was burned down by Dietrich II von Moers . In 1619 the castle burned down again.

In 1896 the complex was acquired by the Elberfeld banker Hans Jordan and renovated from 1903 to 1904 in the Flemish Gothic style, with only the tower remaining from the previous building.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the painter and graphic artist Fritz Gärtner lived and worked for several years in the castle, which is now a listed building, and had set up his studio in the garden house.

A little further north in the forest is the Jordan family's private cemetery .
