Mallinckrodt is the name of an old Westphalian noble family from the county of Mark .

history

The family first appeared in a document in 1241 with the knight Ludwig de Mesekenwerke . The family later named themselves after their seat Burg Mallinckrodt , which they owned as a fief of the Lords of Volmarstein from around 1250 . The family also owned a number of the surrounding farms, including Gut Obergedern and Gut Hoven in Oberwengern (later Howe House ).

Dortmund branch of the family

A younger branch of the family goes back to Evert Mallinchroide (Eberhard Mallinckrodt) , mentioned in a document from 1488–1516 and died in 1526, landowner in Recklinghausen and Dortmund . His descendants did not originally belong to the patriciate of the city, but rose to the notorious bourgeoisie of the city in the 16th century. The Mallinckrodts belonged to the guild of wall tailors and earned their fortune in the cloth trade. The membership in the Wandschneidergesellschaft, since 1589 more than 30 members of the family were demonstrably active in this guild, opened the family the political right to a membership in the city council.

From 1605 to 1805 there were 16 representatives of the family in the Dortmund council. Two of them were mayors and four Mallinckrodts held the office of city judge.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a dispute among aristocracy researchers about the recognition of this Dortmund line as the direct descent to the old noble family of those von Mallinckrodt could not be proven. But in 1902 and 1903, respectively, the membership of the old noble family of those von Mallinckrodt was recognized by the Prussian Herald's Office in Berlin (see below).

Franz Mallinckrodt was from 1812 to 1832 mayor and mayor of the city of Dortmund. His nephew was the publicist Arnold Mallinckrodt (1768-1825). The senior government councilor Detmar von Mallinckrodt (1769–1842) worked in Aachen and retired in Paderborn . His children were the center politicians Hermann von Mallinckrodt and Georg von Mallinckrodt, as well as the foundress Pauline von Mallinckrodt , who was beatified in 1985 and who also founded the Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium Dortmund .

The further rise of this family branch then took place outside of Dortmund. In the Rhineland and Belgium they worked as cloth traders. Edward Mallinckrodt Sr. (1845-1928), a grandson of Arnold Mallinckrodt, founded the company Mallinckrodt Chemical Works together with his two brothers Otto († 1878) and Gustav († 1877) in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1867 . In the 20th century, Georg Wilhelm von Mallinckrodt (* 1930) moved to London, where he married Charmaine Schröder and became a partner in Schroders .

Nobility elevations and nobility recognition

Detmar Mallinckrodt , landlord at Gut Böddeken (today in Wewelsburg ) in the former district of Büren and royal Prussian government vice-president in Aachen , was raised to the Prussian nobility on July 18, 1834 in Berlin . On July 4, 1903, his descendants received the Prussian recognition of the old nobility and membership of the old noble family of the von Mallinckrodt family . On September 18, 1912, the Royal Herald's Office in Berlin declared that the nobility conferred in 1834 no longer existed as such, but had ceased to exist due to the recognition of 1903.

Gustav von Mallinckrodt , a wholesale merchant, factory and estate owner , royal Prussian Privy Councilor of Commerce , as well as his widow Anna and his sons Paul and Max, had already received the same recognition of nobility and affiliation on July 19, 1902 with a diploma dated September 8, 1902 late brother Felix Mallinckrodt , royal Prussian mountain trainee and landowner.
