In the parliamentary elections in Nauru in mid-August 2019, around half of the previous MPs lost their seats. The parliament consists of 19 members. The former President Baron Waqa (term of office 2013–2019) was also no longer elected. He was accused of "an increasingly authoritarian style of government" by observers. Lionel Aingimea received a majority of 12 of the 19 parliamentarians in his election on August 27, 2019 and was thus able to prevail clearly against his rival David Adeang , who had been supported by Baron Waqa.

Australia maintains a refugee camp in the island state for allegedly 300 people who wanted to enter Australia by boat and are therefore deported. The payments from Australia represent the most important source of income for the island state. Human rights groups and the United Nations have repeatedly criticized the conditions of detention.
