The 16th Oceania Weightlifting Championships took place in 1998 for the second time since 1993 in the Republic of Nauru , at the same time as the South Pacific Championships. Present were the Presidents and General Secretaries of the International Weightlifting Federation (IMF), the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation (CWF) and the Oceania Weightlifting Federation (OWF). The competitions were held in eight men's weight classes and seven women's weight classes. The better ranking was achieved by those who mastered the greatest load within a class; the hardest successful attempt was counted in each discipline. The best attempt of the two individual disciplines was rated for the duel . If several athletes lifted the same maximum load, the lighter athlete in terms of body weight was better placed.
