Ong Ye Kung ( Chinese  王 乙 康 , Tamil ஓங் யீ கங் ; born November 15, 1969 ) is a politician of the People's Action Party (PAP) in Singapore , who has been a member of parliament since 2015 and has been a minister several times. He has been Minister of Education since 2018.

Life

After attending Maris Stella High School (MSHS) and Raffles Junior College, Ong Ye Kung began studying economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which he obtained in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc . Economics) with the highest distinction. Between 1993 and 1997 he worked in the Ministry of Communications and from 1997 to 2003 he was press secretary to the then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong . During this time he began postgraduate studies in business administration at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne , which he completed in 1999 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Between 2003 and 2005 he was First Private Secretary to Lee Hsien Loong, who took over the office of Prime Minister on August 12, 2004 . For a time he was also Singapore's deputy chief negotiator for the free trade agreement with the USA and from 2005 to 2008 he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the WDA (Singapore Workforce Development Agency) . During this time he led numerous initiatives to build the infrastructure for further education and training. He then served as Deputy General Secretary of the National Trades Union Congress ( NTUC ) between 2008 and 2012 and as such was responsible for overseeing the employment and employability programs of the labor movement. From 2013 to 2015 he was Director of Group Strategy at the conglomerate Keppel Corporation and as such was responsible for overseeing the long-term strategic planning of the Group's activities.

On September 11, 2015 Ong Ye Kung became a member of parliament for the People's Action Party (PAP) in the Group Representation Constituency (Group Representation Constituency) Sembawang GRC for the first time and has represented this constituency ever since. Shortly after his election, he took over his first government office in the cabinet of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and served from October 1, 2015 to October 31, 2016, both as Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Defense and as Acting Minister for Higher Education and Skills. He then served as Second Defense Minister and Minister for Higher Education and Skills between November 1, 2016 and April 30, 2018. He has been Minister for Education since May 1, 2018 .

His marriage to Diana Kuik Sin Leng had two children.
