Parliamentary election in Nauru 2019

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on August 24, 2019 .

Electoral system

The 19 members of parliament are elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a modified Borda electoral system. Voters elect candidates, with votes counted as a fraction of 1. It is divided by the ranking list number (e.g. a second-placed candidate is rated as ½). The candidates with the highest total number are elected.

Result

The previous President Baron Waqa missed his re-entry into parliament and was therefore unable to take up a third term. Lionel Aingimea was elected as the new President of Nauru after the election in a parliamentary vote with 12 to 6 votes against David Adeang . Eight of the previous parliamentarians, almost half, were not re-elected.
