Kieren Aedogan Keke (born June 27, 1971 in Yaren ) is a Nauruan doctor, former speaker of the Nauruan parliament and former foreign minister.

Life

On April 23, 2004 Keke and his parliamentary colleagues David Adeang , Fabian Ribauw and Baron Waqa participated in protests at the airport in Yaren and were sentenced to 14 years in prison. The sentences were lifted after the change of government the following June 22nd.

In September 2004 , Keke was charged with dual citizenship of Nauru and Australia by Speaker Russell Kun in order to be suspended from his seat in parliament. The indictment was upheld, although the Nauruan constitution does not prohibit dual citizenship. This suspension resulted in another “deadlock” in parliament, whereupon President Ludwig Scotty dissolved parliament. In the following parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2007, Keke was re-elected to parliament and as health minister. On November 10, 2007, he resigned along with Justice Minister Roland Kun and Industry Minister Frederick Pitcher after a falling out with Foreign Minister David Adeang .

After Scotty was deposed by a vote of no confidence in December 2007, Keke was appointed by the new President Marcus Stephen as the new Secretary of State. In December 2009, he and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov agreed that Nauru would recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia . In return, Russia agreed to invest in Nauru's infrastructure. Nauru is the fourth country after Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela to recognize the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

On November 10, 2011, Kieren Keke was replaced by Mathew Batsiua after the resignation of President Stephen . On June 11, 2012, he was reappointed Foreign Minister by President Sprent Dabwido . He resigned on February 7, 2013. In the elections on June 8, 2013, he was re-elected to parliament. In May 2014, however, he was suspended along with two other members of parliament because he had criticized the government of President Baron Waqa in the media . In the 2016 elections he was able to defend his second place in the constituency of Yaren and thus received a seat in parliament again. In the 2019 parliamentary election , on the other hand, he only achieved the third highest value in the vote count and did not get back into parliament.

Keke is the President of the Nauru Rugby Union, which was founded in 2011 and whose national rugby team of seven took part in international competitions for the first time at the 2015 Pacific Games.
