The coat of arms of the Bahamas was bestowed on December 7, 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II .

description

The coat of arms is divided by blue and white. Above a golden rising sun . In the lower half of the escutcheon is the caravel Santa Maria of Christopher Columbus with golden sails. This is since 1971 in the coat of arms of the Bahamas and to commemorate the landing of Columbus in the Bahamas. The coat of arms contains the national symbols in the shield. Heraldic shield holders are a marlin on the right and a flamingo on the left .

On the shield a gold helmet with blue gold helmet covers . Helmkleinod is a shell on a blue and white helmet bulge surrounded by green plants, which symbolizes the diversity of the sea .

The pedestal shows the sea on the right and a piece of land on the left. Above it is a gold ribbon with a blue back on which the English motto of the Bahamas is written:

" Forward Upward Onward Together. "

symbolism

The heraldic animals that surround the shield are the national animals . The flamingo stands on land and the marlin on the water, which indicates the geographical location of the island.

The vibrant colors of the coat of arms are supposed to indicate a bright future for the country. They were chosen because they were thought to be particularly attractive to tourists.

The Santa Maria caravel is intended to commemorate Columbus' landing in the Bahamas.

history

The coat of arms replaced a badge from the 18th century. In a belt with the Latin inscription: Expulsis Piratis Commercia Restituta , German: “When the pirates were driven out, trade flourished again” , a British warship chases two pirate ships. On the belt is the Edwardian crown , under the belt is a ribbon with the word Bahamas .
