Derren Victor Brown (born February 27, 1971 in Croydon ) is a British magician , mentalist and painter . He achieved worldwide fame with his TV series Mind Control on the British broadcaster Channel 4 .

Career

Brown explains in each of his television programs that his tricks are based on a mixture of magic , suggestion , psychology , deception and skillful presentation ("I mix Magic, Suggestion, Psychology, Misdirection and Showmanship"). According to Brown, he uses this mixture of different techniques to manipulate the thoughts of his fellow human beings, to sense their thoughts or to influence them.

In his broadcasts, for example, he is able to redeem an invalid betting slip for cash, pay with bare paper or induce a total stranger to hand over his valuables without reluctance. Brown plays Russian roulette in a stunt broadcast on British television in 2003 . He steered and / or read the thoughts of a volunteer in order to be able to determine in which chamber he put the cartridge.

In the series The Experiments (2011) Brown devotes himself to various ways of manipulating people. For example, he manages to influence some business people so that they are ultimately ready to commit an armed robbery. The episode The Assassin is even about whether you can turn someone into a murderer through suggestion .

Brown is hugely skeptical about paranormal phenomena and explanations . He addresses this in particular in the television special Derren Brown: Messiah from 2005. In this documentary he wants to prove how people with apparently supernatural powers also use psychologically explainable tricks and manipulations. To do this, Brown travels the USA and deals with forms of New Age esotericism , American evangelicalism , telepathy , UFO sightings and spiritualism .

In addition to his television work, Brown has appeared regularly in live shows since 2003. He is the author of several books dealing with magic and manipulation. In Confessions of a Conjurer (2011) Brown also writes about his life and career.

Brown was seen for a cameo on the first episode of the third season of the British television series Sherlock .

In 2018, Derren Brown started a show on the streaming service Netflix . Numerous episodes of this new show are based on the original British specials in terms of themes and content.
