John Whitgift
John Whitgift (* between 1530 and 1533 in Grimsby , Lincolnshire , † February 29, 1604 in Lambeth ) was Archbishop of Canterbury .
Whitgift studied at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge and was a professor there for some time, from 1567 also as Regius Professur of Divinity . In 1571 he was appointed dean in Lincoln and 1577 the Bishop of Worcester appointed. In 1583 it appointed Elizabeth I to the Archbishop of Canterbury .
Whitgift was a Calvinist and found the emerging Puritan writings heretical to the Church of England . He had numerous writings, including William Shakespeare 's The Phoenix and the Turtledove , censored. The dispute with the Marprelate controversy (1588–1589) reached its climax .
In 1595 he founded the Whitgift School in Croydon . One of his last official acts was the coronation of James I in January 1604. A month later Whitgift died.
