The phoenix and the turtledove
The Phoenix and the Turtle ( English The Phoenix and the Turtle ) is a lamentation poem by William Shakespeare .
The work first appeared in 1601 in the anthology Love’s Martyr or Rosaline's Complaint , edited by Robert Chester . The pseudonym Torquato Caeliano was given as the author of the anthology . In reality, in addition to Shakespeare, John Marston and George Chapman were also involved. By using a foreign and false name, the authors tried to deceive the censors of Archbishop John Whitgift , but they failed.
